Compression Socks?

I posted this on the travel group, but didn't get a response. I'll try again here....

Some of you mention you have been wearing compression socks (or recommend them for airplane travel). Do you have any recommendations on what to buy? I'd like to be a little more knowledgeable before I invest in a few pairs for my upcoming trip. Looks like they come in different 'pressures' - which kind have you had? Is one type best for travel? They sell socks, tights, and leggings - any preferences? Any favorite brands or places to buy them?

  • I know compression socks are supposed to help with swelling. I use them but I use them more for running and soreness. If you can find a specialty running store, they'll usually have compression socks, calf sleeves, etc. and they'll let you try them out. I'm a big fan of zensah and cep but I'm not sure if they'd be too tight for everyday wear.

  • I've been wearing them daily for my last 3 pregnancies due to vericose veins. If you just want them for airplane travel I personally would get 2 pair of 15-20mmHg support knee highs. The higher the number the tighter they are, but also more difficult to put on. That's also why I recommend knee highs vs thigh highs or full on pantyhose styles. You only need 2 pair because you can hand wash them in the sink and hang to dry and keep rotating as such for your trip. They have lots of cute colors and patterns but if you wear a lot of flats you probably want at least 1 pair of nude colored ones that are less noticable. The ones made for athletes recovery are also very nice and work well! I have bought all mine on Amazon recently. Hope that helps!!

  • I wear them because I'm at high risk for blood clots. You might want to think about getting a prescription from your dr so you can get the really nice ones.
  • My dr recommended the kind you can find at Walgreens.  She said the best time to put them on is first thing in the morning before you roll out of bed.

I got an Rx from my dr for them and the pharmacy said that only Medicare patients are covered for support hose.  So apparently that's not true?  Did you have to do something different to get them, or order online or something?

  • I got them from my doctor (with my first baby) too, but I think they wrote them off as a professional courtesy - they just grabbed me two pairs and never billed me for them. I totally agree with the knee high ones though. I had a pair of thigh-highs too and omg they were suck a pain. By the end I needed help from hubs getting even the knee-highs on and off.
