Re: 3 bottles how to drop the middle one?

  • We're still on three 8-oz bottles at a year, and are just now transitioning to milk and sippy cups, one bottle at a time. I'm not sure what age your kiddos are, but if you're dropping the middle bottle, what are you replacing it with?

  • My boys are almost 11 months. My doc was pretty adamant about being off bottle by a year.( I don't really feel the same bc they were preemies). They have missed that bottle a few times and it didn't seem to mess anything up(schedule). I was thinking of replacing it with a snack and formula sippy? Just looking for ideas of others experience. Thanks

  • I'm surprised your pedi wants bottles completely gone at 1 year...especially because they were premature! My pedi would like us to be bottle free around 18 months. Right now, my boys still take 3 8oz bottles a day and they are not interested in dropping yet, so I'm not pushing it.

  • Our pedi wanted us to start the transition at a year. We'll be replacing that bottle with a sippy of milk, so I don't see why you couldn't replace it with a sippy of formula. Our doc recommended switching one bottle at a time, a week apart. So week #1 we'll replace lunch bottle with a sippy. Week #2 we'll replace morning bottle, then week #3 we'll replace evening bottle.

We're moving in a few weeks, so we're going to wait and transition once we're in. I don't think a few weeks either way make a big deal, and if you think they need more time with bottles being preemies, I'd trust your gut.

  • Are you sure your dr wanted them to drop the actual bottle vs. just replacing it with a sippy of milk? At our 1-year appt, our dr. said they wanted them off formula and onto milk ASAP and then said we could work on getting them off bottles of milk and onto sippies with the goal of no more bottles by 15 months.

Right after that appt, we transitioned to milk in the bottles, still giving 4 bottles/day (wake-up, after first nap, after second nap, bedtime). After they were totally off formula and comfortably on milk, we transitioned to sippies. Last Friday afternoon, we went just about cold turkey on bottles and transitioned to straw sippies for 3 out of 4 bottles. They fought the sippies twice and then transitioned nicely. Today, we just did a bedtime bottle and sippies for the other 3 with no protest. It was much easier than I thought it would be. We'll work on the bedtime bottle in a few more days.

  • My pedi wanted us to transition to cow's milk at 12 months, no more than 12 oz/day, and start getting rid of bottles.  We were also supposed to have been on 3 square meals/day prior to 12 months.

So I just dropped the bottle at 12 months.  Didn't replace it with anything.  They got 6 oz of milk in the morning and 6 at night.  2 weeks after their birthday they were only using sippy cups (straw cups) - I did that cold turkey.  Once I found they could drink out of straw cups (they never did sippy cups), I switched over right away.
