whiny vent: I'm sick :-(

First, DH got sick, then Warner and now it's my turn. Except that for them, they just have a running nose and some sneezes. But, because I'm so lucky, every time I get the slightest runny nose, it turns into a sinus infection. AND I CAN'T TAKE ANY DAMN MEDICINE!

I did take some tylenol when my fever started to get high and that did help a bit, but the sinus pain/pressure is still pretty bad. and because one sinus is completely blocked, I can't even use my neti pot. (I tried, even though the directions say not to...I was desperate.)

and now DH is at work and I'm sick and stuck at home with an energetic two year old all day. we might be watching a lot of Dora and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse today :-(

I'll just add this to my list of "Things that pregnant women should not have to deal with" (along with morning sickness, acne, and peeing every 3 minutes...)

Re: whiny vent: I'm sick :-(

  • Ugh, I'm sorry.  I had a sinus infection around that time in my pregnancy, and I was miserable.  I called my OB and they said I could take some OTC pg-approved meds -- can you not take any of those?

I'm the same as you - if I get any hint of sickness, it turns into a sinus infection.

Have you tried the baby ear-dropper nasal irrigation method?  It's similar to the neti pot, but you spray the solution up one nostril at a time, and it helps to get things flushed out.

  • I have had a terrible cold/allergies for the last week so I feel for you in your no medicine state! Hope you feel better soon.

So my mom swears by throwing a wet washcloth in the microwave to warm up and then putting it across your eyes and cheeks. It does help some of the pressure.

  • Uggh.  There is nothing worse than being pregnant and sick with a healthy toddler.  It's really the perfect storm.  I hope you feel better soon.  On the things you can try list, have you tried steam or VIcks Vapo Rub?  The former was my friend during my pregnancy.  The latter, I've heard good things about (including something about putting Vicks on your feet and then putting on socks.
  • I'm so sorry!  I'm also one of those people that gets sinus infections at the slighest hint of a cold.  Usually when I'm pregnant I don't get them (it's like I have super immunity) but I did get one (a really bad one - pain in my teeth) when pg with DD2.  Wet washcloth in the micro helps, I think my OB gave me a list of safe OTC meds (which I took in moderation because I was desparate) and antibiotics.  At this point antibiotics are the only thing that cure mine.  I read that apple cider vineager also helps.  I drank it and it did help to thin the mucs and relieve pressure - google it. The neti pot doesn't do anything for me.  Sometimes I think it makes things worse. Before my septoplasty they were worse - now at least my nose can drain - but I still get at least 4-5+ per year.  Hang in there!
  • I'm sorry. :(  Are you sure you can't take anything? My ob's office said it was ok to use regular Sudafed. When I got really desperate, I used a small amount of Afrin nasal spray, which is like a wonder drug for me.

I called this morning and they said that I can take Sudafed, but whenever I have taken it in the past, it makes my heart race. My old PCP said that it's because of the pseudoephedrine in it, but that is in a lot of stuff that I've taken without that reaction. Anyway, that reaction makes me kinda scared to take it while pregnant. I'm probably being overly cautious...but I'd rather play it safe.

Yeah, good call. It does have that effect on some people. Have you tried the new kind of Sudafed (Sudafed PE) that they sell on the drug store shelf? It has phenylephrine, which is a different drug. You may not react to that one. The pseudoephedrine version is the one they sell behind the counter now. I know you may not want to experiment with new drugs right now, but you might want to try it after your pregnancy and see if it works for you.
