Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Need ideas for good/healthy finger foods for 10 m/o...

We're moving more from the baby food to finger foods - DS seems to prefer self-feeding...I currently try pretty much anything/everything.  I seem to find breakfast foods OK but not really sure what kinds of things would be good to offer for lunch/dinners.  Thanks ladies.

  • My DD loves the spreadable cheese wedges (Laughing Cow brand I think) on crackers....mac n cheese....fruit, cooked/steamed veggies.  Grilled cheese sandwich, pasta, really anything that we are eating I put on her tray to see if she will eat it.  Most times she will!

  • I usually just cut up whatever we're eating. Little pieces of chicken, pasta, peas, green beans, soft fruits. If we aren't eating something that is easily cut up for DS, I'll give him yogurt.

  • DS LOVES Mac N Cheese, Butter & Jelly Sandwiches, Spaghetti O's, cut up pieces of deli turkey and cut up pieces of cheese. He likes cubed cooked potatoes...

He eats just about everything! Oh and he loves those Chicken and Turkey sticks from Gerber!

  • Our daughter eats almost everything we do, with the exception of salads and capsicums, as she has trouble chewing/swollowing them.

    Some of her favourites are:

    - broccoli
    - chicken
    - pasta
    - shredded pork
    - grilled cheese

Do you use like, kraft singles for the cheese? When I make grilled cheese I use like cut up cracker barrel cheese and it seems to be more...stringy than the singles, which seems..smoother? Does that make sense?

    I agree with that!

In our house, it depends who makes them.  Personally, I prefer brick cheese cut up on mine, so that's how I make Kennedy's.  But, if my husband makes it, he puts the slices.

  • Do your kids have a lot of teeth?  I want to move on from the purees, as Nate likes feeding himself too, but he only has two bottom teeth.  I just can't see him eating a sandwich or crackers...  Am I worrying too much?  Can they eat that type of thing without teeth? I give him soft, cooked veggies, puffs, etc.

Teeth aren't used for chewing at this point. Their gums are strong enough to handle small chunks and steamed foods. Keep an eye on him and he'll be fine, even if he had no teeth.

    This is true.

Although Kennedy has a LOT of teeth, our friends twins didn't get their first tooth until they were almost 14 months, and they were eating table food well before this.

Ditto this.  My DD has eaten table/finger food since we started solids at 6 months. She didn't have any teeth.  She will eat just about anything and everything. You'd be amazed what they can eat with no teeth!

  • DD eats pretty much what we eat. She loves granola bars, cereal bars, rice cakes, toast, quesadillas, any kind of shredded meat (shredded works best for her), cheese (again she likes it shredded), fruit-any kind (she can eat whole apples, see my siggy), steamed vegetable sticks (though she is currently boycotting all green things), Cheerios and other dry easy to pick up cereals.  She really can eat just about anything.
