Is this from teething!?! He's insane.

DS started sleeping like crap a few weeks ago and just a few days ago the first bottom tooth started poking through so it made sense. It's still barely above the skin... not all of the top of it is even visible. He's been grumpy, but tylenol during the worst of it usually helped. Today he is horrible. He acts ravenous, and will take maybe 2 or 3 sucks and arches his back and starts screaming bloody murder with tears running down his face. He has reflux and food allergies, but he's seemed fine until today. We've done nothing new food wise, so I don't think it can be allergies. I haven't heard/seen him reflux today. I gave him tylenol and it doesn't even seem to be doing anything. He's had one nap today and the only way I could stop him from screaming was to put him in his jumperoo until he fell asleep. :( Then when he was sleeping I fed him in his sleep. He's eaten 1/2 of maybe what he usually does and has had 2 naps (usually 4). He doesn't have a fever. Is the back arching and screaming a normal teething/pain thing? Any recommendations other than tylenol? I've heard orajel wasn't recommended really anymore... Not sure about that. Any help? We've both been in tears all day.

  • YES it is teething! Ugh, I could have written this exact same thing a few weeks ago; I thought DD had reflux because she struggled to latch, would come off and on, and arch her back and scream, it was awful. She cried all day long. I felt like I had tried everything in the world to help so I took her to the pedi, who confirmed it was teething. We felt so stupid...

Try the tylenol. Well, acetaminophen since they don't make infant "Tylenol" anymore. And you're right, Ora-gel or numbing agents aren't recommended for fear that it numbs LOs throat (since they swallow some) and may repress the gag or spit up reflex. HTH!

  • Yes. We've been going through this for TWO weeks and it is awful. I even took him to the pedi because one day he went from 10pm-4pm the next day and had only eaten 10oz of formula. I thought he might have an ear infection (since he didn't want to suck the bottle) but he was fine. Of course she couldn't see anything in his mouth so she wasn't sure what was wrong, but I am sure it is teething. He fights the bottle and starts screaming and chewing on the nipple. He is sucking his hands, drooling, etc. No teeth have popped through yet. He is too little to hold a teething ring so it sucks. I've been doing Tylenol and trying to get him to suck on a cold wash cloth. We are going to go to Target tomorrow and see if we can find a ring for him.

I'm sorry but a big Confused to your pedi! Just because the teeth haven't cut through the gums doesn't mean they aren't teething. Our's explained that the teeth are present since birth and are moving their way up the gums, which is painful. So just because we don't see or feel teeth doesn't mean she isn't teething or uncomfortable! And since you said you questioned an ear infection, I did read and confirm with my pedi that they will pull on their ears while teething; it helps alleviate some jaw pressure.

OP, I would give him acetaminophen as needed, especially at night, and during the day try a frozen washcloth (I roll mine up into Os). We tried to give her some breastmilk chunks in a mesh teether but she wasn't interested. My LLL leader suggested rubbing her gums with either one of those gum massagers or a clean finger before feedings and that should help, too.
