Mom's that work with Children... (repost from 3-6)

I just recently went back to work. I am and Early Intervention Specialist.  I work with children who have developmental delays.  We go into their homes and work with the children and their parents.  I tell parents to please call me to reschedule if their child is not feeling well, sick, etc.

I have a preemie and we are extra cautious about being around sick people.  I hate the thought of bringing home germs.  I'm half way through my first visit of the day when I hear the infant with a slight wheezing breath.  I then look at his nose which is covered in snot.  He's teething so he's drooling everywhere.

I finish up my visit and gently remind the parents to let me know if they child is sick next time so we may reschedule.  I don't think the parents care or think much of a child with a cold.

My question for all of those moms who work with children, how do you stay sane?  How do you prevent the germs?  I feel like I bathe in hand sanitizer after each visit!!  I started wearing scrub tops over my shirts so I can remove them after visits.  I still go home and immediately change clothes (after washing up).

I know I'm probably going overboard... but I just worry so much about my little preemie!!

It was hard. My son was a very small, pretty delicate kid that first year(ish) and was in EI.

I actually didn't worry too much about the therapist that much. We were adamant that EVERYONE wash up as soon as coming in and they were fine with that.
I actually worried more about the toys that got drug in and out of every home and inevitably chewed and slobbered on.

Fortunately most of our therapists were really great about carrying disinfectant wipes and cleaning them up between sessions.

I think it's sweet and amazing that you're so concerned. It sounds like you're doing everything you can.
