How do you give liquid meds?

DD is on reflux meds.  She's always hated them, but until a couple weeks ago, I could make it work.  Now, I can't get her to take them.  I've tried mixing with breast milk, putting them in a bottle nipple, everything.  I've even asked at the pharmacy if they can change the flavor, but they can't.  As soon as she realizes its the medicine, she holds her mouth closed or spits it out.  It makes me feel TERRIBLE cause I have to hold her mouth open by pinching her cheeks together (make her make the fish face) to even get it in.

She does this with her Vit D drops too, but I'm just going to get some that only take a drop or two and hope that will work.

She NEEDS this, how do I get her to take it!!

  • Poor thing! DS only takes Polyvisol but I guess he likes it because I put the dropper in his mouth and starts sucking. Occasionally I give him some gas relief drops and he doesn't really like the flavor because he tries to spit it out so i put the droper on the inside of his cheek as far as I can without hurting him or gaging him and that's the only way.

She's figured out how to get that back up too. This kid is DETERMINED to not take this stuff.

  • Not sure what med she is on but our daughter is on Previcid and we fill the script at a compounding pharmacy so they can flavor it for us...grape, bubble gum or cherry

I give her a small drop at a time while she is lying on the floor playing on her gym mat

  • Mixing it with BM is how normally do it. But if she doesn't get a bottle that day, I stick my clean pinkie in her mouth to suck. Then I put the tip of the syringe into her mouth and do small bits at a time, so if she does spit it out there isn't much.
  • My daughter has acid reflux. She hates the taste of her medicine. She's on Zantac. I called and asked the pharmacist if I could put it in her bottle. She said it would be ok. I've been putting it in LO's formula or I give it to her in a bottle of pedialyte. I give her just 3 ounces so I know she'll finish it. I haven't had any issues with this method. Good Luck.

  • Does she take a paci? A friend of ours from the NICU cross-cut a pacifier and gives the meds that way. Her DD wouldn't do the nipple trick but is ok with the pacifier for some reason.
