Oh good because this hasn't been beaten to death on this board yet. Are you also going to compare it to taking meth?
To answer your question - because my office said it was fine, some Harvard study says it's fine, because I want to. I'm perfectly comfortable having 2 oz of wine every now and again 3rd tri. Feel free to tell me I'm selfish and you feel sorry for my babies.
For starters, 1 drink is a heck of a lot different than 10 drinks, regardless of whether or not you are pregnant.
Some women choose to have an occasional drink during pregnancy because there are numerous studies that show that an occasional alcoholic drink during pregnacy has no adverse effects on the fetus.

Well I was looking for real explanation to help me better understand and to also see if Im really one of the only people who is blown away by that. Im not sure what youre referring to but no Im not going to compare it to anything because it doesnt need a comparison.

Yes. It's why I choose not to drink during pregnancy. However, I think that other studies have validity too, and I understand why some women choose to have an occasional drink.

This is just not true. I'm not going to get into the debate, because it really has been beaten to death. But current studies do NOT show detrimental effects to the fetus from moderate drinking.

Im actually someone who on almost all fronts can make myself steer clear of the bad choices that other people make. When it comes to giving children the best possible chance at life, its totally different. There are SO many babies that have problems and so many women who have higher risks for their babies having problems than others. Thinking about how hard those people try and hope for the best outcome for their children, it's really hard to hear people justify a few drinks during pregnancy. Seems like the few things we actually have control of we would use the right way huh?

Detrimental effects? Are you joking? When did this become about small effects versus detrimental effects? Im not speaking for you, but I know small effects of the selfish choices I make have on my child are enough for me. They should be enough for every person fortunate enough to get pregnant. I think if March of Dimes confirms it, it's safe to say it's valid. This is just the first thing I found, there are many many more.

Without reading more about the actual studies, all I get from that March of Dimes article is that some studies suggest drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol may cause problems. Perhaps there are confounding factors, such as the mother's overall health during pregnancy and the environment in which the children were raised. Those studies =/= proof that drinking occasionally during pregnancy is harmful.
But I take further issue with the assertion that drinking even small amounts when NOT pregnant is unhealthy. Actually, drinking small amounts (no more than one drink a day for women and two for men) has health benefits over total abstention.

Melle, I generally like you, but you are coming across as extremely judgey here. As PP said, there are studies that go both ways. There are studies about not drinking pre-conception, about not using OTC meds, about no stress, about exercise vs no exercise. To each their own. I'm surprised you feel such a need to judge others and push your position on this topic; that is generally unlike you. And, FWIW, in my years of teaching and working with children with special needs, the vast majority (as in 95%+), had syndromes, disorders or other complications that were not caused by environmental factors in utero. However, I can guarantee you that a larger percentage of the parents took risks in while they were pregnant with their LO.

I dont do just about anything that is said to potentially cause harm to a fetus. That being said, alcohol is TOTALLY different than lunchmeat and chocolate. Know why? Because alcohol is ALWAYS toxic to your body. Pregnant or not. It has no health benefits and causes a certain amount of harm (very small or very large) every time your drink it.
