Pregnant after IF

Fetal Echtocardiogram... and I can't spell

Anyone had one of these?? I don't think i've really seen them mentioned, but it may not have been something I've paid attention to.

The perinatologist wants me to have one between 24-26 weeks due to my low Papp-A..... any ladies out there who can tell me what it is, and what it involves?

Thanks lovely ladies!!! :)

  • I did! It was pretty much a thorough ultrasound, the same as anatomy scan except they pay a closer attention to the heart to see that the blood circulation is normal, that the heart has 4 chambers, etc.

  • I have had a bunch and will continue to every 2 weeks now because of one of the baby's heart defect.  Pretty much it's a very detailed ultrasound and they look at the heart and all the bloodflow.  It's pretty neat to see.  You don't have to do anything special to prepare.  Mine are usually long because the baby is uncooperative, and sometimes I have to change positions.  Mine have typically last 35-60 minutes for them to look at the one baby.  With us, the cardiologist reviews all the scans with us and then we talk about our plan for surgery and we're able to ask questions right in the room.  Good luck!!

  • I was going to ask about this too! We had our first OB appt yesterday and the dr told us IVF babies sometimes have higher incidences of heart issues (she said not unusually higher but higher) and wants us to have it done around 24-26 weeks as well. I plan to look online later and see what info I can find.

  • I had one. It's just a detailed u/s of the heart, pretty much. No big deal.

  • I had mine done this past Thursday.  It is basically a lengthy ultrasound of just the heart.  The tech looks at the heart chambers, the aorta, the pulminary viens, and the blood pumping through each of these areas.  Then the pictures are reviewed by the cardiologist and you speak to him/her about the baby's heart.  Mine went very well, other than that our baby was constantly in the wrong positions.  But the tech did get all the pictures needed.  I was there for almost 2 hrs, including the talk with the Dr.  My LO wouldn't cooperate at my a/s and the 2nd try of an a/s.  I was worried to be referred for an echocardiogram, but my OB said that the probability that there is a problem is slim.  Plus technology today is able to fix most heart issues easily.
