I think it might also depend on ethnicity. I grew up in a dominantly Latin small town, there were several Nico's. Their full name was Nicolas. I didn't meet a Nick or Nicholas until I moved away.

My DS's name is Nicholas and we had the same issue when naming him, especially because my DH is hispanic, I am not and in the hispanic culture they don't use the "h". We decided to keep the "h" because as a teacher most people will automatically put the "h" in it.

Mine too! I went without the h because my name is Nicole and I always hated when people would spell it with an h. I'm also Mexican and even though DH is white I wanted the Spanish spelling for DS.
