Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you start giving real baths?

Instead of sponge baths?  I'm wondering when I can start giving LO a bath in her tub with soap, instead of just wiping her with a warm washcloth.  I don't remember this stuff from DD #1! Thanks!!

Re: When did you start giving real baths?

  • We did at 8 weeks old...sponge baths were just easier until then.

  • We gave a real bath at like 3 days? They did in the hospital, we were just careful around her stump.

  • about 6 weeks. you are not supposed to use soap every day on baby's skin so I used warm water at first just to get her used to it. We now use J&J all over wash every night and make her a little bubble bath. I try not to wash her hair every evening
  • As soon as his cord fell off at one week. Bathtime is his favorite activity. It's part of our bedtime routine.

  • My baby also loves the bath. It's safe as soon as the cord falls off, around 3 weeks.

  • As soon as his cord fell off, so after a week.  We don't use soap everyday except on his genitals and bottom per the instructions from our pedi.  We also wash his hair everyday.  He loves to just sit in the warm water and splash.

  • The first hot humid day...she was maybe 1 week old (I'm German and never heard of sponge bathing a newborn until I came here) so I gave the poor sweatball a bath and she lived :)

We also always used a Q-Tip Soaked in alcohol to rub around the base of the stump until it fell off.

  • For boys when the cord falls off and everything is healed if they got a circ. DS had a very small umbilical cord stump so we gave him a mostly normal bath and just kept his stump dry when he was about 5 days old and have been giving them ever since. His cord fell off at 2 weeks and we have been giving him baths and he absolutely LOVES them. He gets such a happy look on his face. We put him in his little tub, hold his head up and he just moves his little arms and legs through the water and looks like he is in heaven.
