Can you help me with my doppler?

My doppler came in the mail yesterday and of course I had to play with it.  I just have a few questions.   I took a little work but I did find 3 different readings .  The lowest one was 98bpm and I am assuming that was me,  the second number was122bpm and I am guessing that was an artery?  The third number was 135 bpm  I am hoping this was the baby but I am not sure.  At my last appointment 2 weeks ago the hr was 147  could it be 135 now?

I am also wondering if I should be pushing down on the doppler or just resting it on the surface.  I had to push down a bit to get a reading and I didn't know if that was right.

Any help is appreciated!

Re: Can you help me with my doppler?

  • I have no idea what the ranges are, but last week mine were 161 on wed, 169 on thursday and then 149 this tuesday. I had to have 3 u/s for the NT... Last time my OB tried a doppler on me at 13 weeks we could not get one. I had a retroverted uterus so it was not possible. Hoping to hear it next week at 15 weeks :)

  • I believe the normal hb range at 12 weeks is 120-160 bpm.

I wanted to let you know, though, that at 12 weeks, I still don't always get a reading on my Sonoline B display.  I almost always hear the hb, but the reading doesn't always appear in the display window.  I would think your LO's hb would be much faster than the numbers you listed.  I recently got a reading of 120 and wondered if my LO's hb had dropped significantly since my last appt, but when I went for my NT scan Tues the hb was 162.

It's easy to discern the sound of your own hb from the baby's.  There have been a lot of threads about this, but here's the one I remember:

The link to the youtube video is helpful in giving you an example of the different sounds.  That way you know it's the hb, even if the display isn't picking it up yet.

Hope this helps!  Congrats on your doppler.  They're so fun!

  • I'm about 12 weeks and mine hangs around 145. But the screen reading is often off - I have to time it myself (count it for 10 seconds then multiply by 6). And yes, you should pressing down a little.

  • I tried again this morning and for sure found it.  It was very clear and registered as 145 bpm.  For whatever reason I have better luck if I am just off to the right a bit. Guess it just takes some practice to find the sweet spot. It was fun to see my husbands face light up when we found it.  I think it will be our new bed time routine :)

     Thanks for the help!

  • I'm not much help. Mine arrived yesterday and it took me awhile to find anything. Then when I found a swish-swish sound we thought maybe it was the heartbeat but it seemed to be going really slow.  I realized that is my "maternal blood flow"  and tried again, but never did find the heartbeat.  Hopefully I'll have better luck tonight.

ETA:  I also had a tilted uterus at my appointment a few weeks ago so I wonder if that makes a difference.

  • OP, glad you were able to find it! I have noticed that my baby is in a different spot if I check in the morning than it normally is at night, so don't be alarmed if you can't find it in the same spot later.

I made this video about using the doppler and the different sounds/noises you can pick up. Hope that helps the other poster having trouble!

Aww, thanks. :) She's still kind of in the kitten stage so she's always being silly. She's definitely my first baby!
