High-Risk Pregnancy

Question to GD ladies

I have a question for you ladies.  I have not been diagnosed with GD for any of my pregnancies, but it is always on my mind with my family history of Diabetes in general.  I also know that you can develop it at anytime, but they usually test around the 3rd tri.  As per my ticker I have not made it that far yet for the test and so far I'm guess my PIAC test has been good b/c they haven't said anything about that.

However I have been having headaches, a little dizziness and this extremely odd eye thing going on.  My main question is about the eye thing.  My right eye has been giving me issues for a little over a week.  It gets this blurred spot to the right corner that sometimes I can't see out of the whole eye and currently I can see out of it, but it's blurred enough to mess up my focus with both eyes open.

SO my question is: Do you ladies have an eye complaints to date and if so are they anywhere similar to mine to where I should probably ask for an early GD test.

PS.  I added extra cause for concern this pregnancy b/c I started off a little fluffier that usual when I got pregnant.  (by little I mean my BMI has me listed as Obese for my size)

I asked her about it on Friday and she said it was too early for pre-e and my bp was good so she said to ck with eye doctor which I will, but wanted to throw this question out to you ladies because I know from my mom eye issues come with the territory as well depending on your sugar level.

She was great at managing her sugar so she didn't have to put on her oh so stylish bifocals, but it was an occasional occurrence.

  • Nope, no eye issues here.  If you are worried, why not just ask your doc if you can take the test early?  If you pass, you will probably have to re-take it later (28 weeks-ish).  If you fail, you can start getting on the GD diet now.  You have risk factors that seem relevant enough to screen early.  I was screened early and was glad since I was diagnosed early and was able to start managing blood sugars early.

  • I have had a similar eye issue but it has always been a aura that is the start of a migraine.  I had these before pregnancy when I was not considered diabetic and a few while I have been pregnant as well.

  • are you having any flashing lights, new floaters, or gray shadows/blocked area of vision in your eye?  I had a detached retina develop when I was pg with DS so I'd definitely check in with your eye doc.

  • I had eye issues with both pregnancies (and while BFing for that matter).  I only had GD with my last pregnancy and since my numbers weren't that high I'm guessing it had nothing to do with my vision issues.

  • Thank you ladies.  I'll ask if I can be checked early.

DH shuts me down every time I mention GD like it's some dream thing that will never happen, but I know better and with the many things that have gone wrong in subsequent pregnancies after my very first pregnancy that went over without a hitch I don't look at anything as completely impossible.

  • I think you should go ahead and get tested early for GD.  If you pass then they'll still test you at 26-28 weeks because that's when it "normally" develops.  Sometimes it does develop early though and since you're nervous - it certainly could not hurt getting tested early.

Regarding your husband shutting the idea down - my DH and I NEVER thought I'd fail the 1 hour let alone the 3 hour and here I am!
