Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toe walkers?

Does anyone else have a LO who walks on their toes?  My DS only walks on his toes.  The doctor said that he'll grow out of it.  The problem is that it definitely affects his balance and it really seems to bother/worry DH.

Re: Toe walkers?

  • My doc told me that you should see less toe walking and more heal to toe walking the older they get.

If you don't see that decrease as they get older there could be a problem.

He suggested that she wears harder soled shoes all the time to help her do this.

LIke the off and running shoes from stride rite.

I know a lot of woman on here put their lo in them from there. Well worth the money.

  • We always attributed Peyton's toe walking to her CP because she always did it, but it turns out it was because of her tethered cord because she rarely has done it post surgery.

I think our PT said it takes 10 months after they learn to walk for it to completely go away.

Personally, if your LO is ONLY walking on tippy toes I would be concerned.

We had surestep orthotics fitted to help Peyton.

Your options would be to A. get a PT eval for it or B. a neuro eval for it.  C. Wait it out.

(i'm sure you have more options, those are just the ones I could think of..)

DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

  • I would be concerned if he is ONLY toe-walking. Try to get 2nd opinion. Does your school district do developmental screening for birth-age 3? I would call and ask, because if they don't they can likely point you to a good resource.

  • DD toe walks as well. Pedi said he would be concerned if she still did at three but now it's normal for starting to walk. It bothers me, but she CAN walk on her flat feet but mostly goes up on her toes.  I am still going to ask him at her 18 month appt.
