Kick Counts?

I was reading in What to Expect When Youre Expecting last night about kick counts and it says that I am getting close to the point where I should be doing them. The book said that you should feel 10 kicks in an hour. The thing is, I have been trying to keep track of kicks this morning, but I definately have not had 10 kicks in the past hour. Should this be of concern? I checked with the doppler and the baby has a good hb, he just isn't active AT ALL this morning.

Re: Kick Counts?

  • If you're not quite at the point where you're supposed to do kick counts, then I wouldn't worry.  Does baby have a more active time of day?  If his heart is going strong, I think he's probably just fine. Maybe he's just sleeping today, it happens to them the same way it does to us!  If you're still really worried, give your Dr's office a call and see what they say.

My little guy doesn't have any problems getting 10 kicks in about 5 minutes when he's active, but he will go through a couple hours of sleepy time before lunch, and before dinner.  It's also hard for me to pay attention to and feel when I'm busy running around at work or home getting things done.

  • It is early for you still, but if you read up more, they say if you don't feel 10 in an hour, wait another hour. If you feel 10 in 2 hours, then you're good.  If not, drink a cold drink, and lay on your left side in a quiet room.

  • Way to soon to freak out.

Kick counts aren't recommended until like 28 weeks.  You've still got some time.

Later if you do have decreased fetal movement you would want to try several times over a longer period of time.  One hour of less than 10 kicks is not a cause for concern.

  • My doctor never had me count kicks. She told me I should feel the baby every hour, but counting how many times wasn't necessary. And  have to say, plenty of times I didn't feel him 10 times in an hour. And he turned out perfect, so I'm glad I didn't stress about it.

Regardless though, I've heard 28 weeks is when they tell people-- you still have a few weeks, and your baby WILL get bigger and stronger in those 3 weeks. So really don't worry about it right now!

  • My OB's office has an interactive video screen in each exam room for patients to watch while waiting for the doctor.  I watched the "Kick Counts" video yesterday and it said to look for 10 counts in 2 hours while lying on your left side.

Then, if you don't get 10, wait a few hours, eat a meal and try again.  If you still don't get 10 kicks, call the doc and they'll do a scan just in case.

  • Too early. This can make you totally crazy to be honest. with my first, there were hours upon hours I didnt feel her at this point.

Wait till 28 weeks at least.

The time to get concerned is when things change- so if for example, you always feel the baby most of the day, and then don't, etc.You need to trust your gut vs. what some website says.

I still hardly feel her at over 26 weeks most of the day because my placenta is in the front- i go to ultrasounds and she is kicking like crazy and I don't feel it.
