I read in a blog where she let her 3YO go into the dollar store and pick anything she wanted to give to daddy. She came back with some pretty interesting things but he apparently got a good laugh out of it.
The pottery idea is a great one.
I did a little photo book that DH could take with him on business trips of daddy and DD pictures.
I usually take the kids to the store and let them choose something for DH for his bday, Father's Day, Xmas, etc. They come up with some pretty neat ideas for gifts all by themselves, and I think it teaches them some important lessons about giving gifts that appeal to the recipient and about shopping/money.
I usually start by brainstorming a bunch of ideas of things we could look at/for before we go to the store and then narrowing it down a bit by discussing each item and whether or not it's something that Daddy would enjoy or not. Then I help them stay "on budget" while shopping, and as we're making choices we sometimes have 2-3 that are in the cart until we're ready to make the final choice at the end. DS loves to go shopping for gifts.
A few ideas we've done in the past:
Things (toys, games) that Daddy can do with DS (games, toys, cars, etc.)
T-shirts that have themes that Daddy would like (very interesting to see what DS comes up with for this "theme." Ex., I always ask, "Why would Daddy want/need a Spiderman shirt?" He's had some cute responses.)
Not for Daddy but I suppose it could be...Items to make recipient feel good (chose pampering items like facial masks, lotions, etc. for grandma)
Helped bake something for Daddy (he has a HUGE sweet tooth) or chose a sweet treat (special candy or cookies) that we wouldn't normally buy
Shopped for ingredients for a special birthday dinner that Daddy would really enjoy
Helped plan a weekend of activities for Father's Day that we could all do together as a surprise for Daddy
We've done the $Tree suggestion from PP too. It was a HUGE hit. I actually gave DS the $5 bill to pay for his items, and he thought he was big stuff. He was very proud of himself when he gave the gifts to Daddy.
We like to let DD shop on her own too...she got me a Zhu Zhu pet for my birthday And DH got a toilet seat for Christmas. I help focus her more in the areas of the store at least...we were in the aisle with the tools and turned the corner and ran into bathroom things...she had her heart set on the "new potty chair" for daddy. She also really wanted to get him Elmo...so I went for the toilet seat. He thought it was hilarious.

The toilet seat is hilarious!
DD's given DH some games that they can play together (Go Fish, 5 Little Monkeys). I got a canvas from Michaels last year for Father's Day and let her finger paint on it - we hung it up in our dining room to dry and it's stayed there. It's quite the conversation piece (and DH and I really love it!)
