the first day i was in the hospital gown. the second day when they said i could take a sponge bath type deal i changed into my own nightgown & felt much more human. (and i didn't leak massive amounts of bodily fluids all over it like people led me to believe i would. those pads were so freakin huge, there was no blood going ANYWHERE! lol).
i'm also plus sized and the regular sized hospital gowns were just a tad too small and the plus sized gowns were WAYYYY too big. there was no middle ground. So for my own comfort & modesty, my own nightgowns were the way to go.
I did bring yoga pants to wear but they were checking my incision & my belly so much, that it made no sense to change into pants.
You can wear your own stuff for everything but the actual surgery. I changed into my own nursing nightgown as soon as I was in the recovery room. The nurse tried to talk me out of it but I insisted and I'm glad I did. I was much more comfortable. I just made sure I wasn't actually sitting on it so it didn't stain.

I wore pajamas with a button up top as soon as I was able to. I had lots of people coming to visit and it made me feel a bit better. Vain, I know. This time I plan on doing something similar.

Yes, I stayed in the hospital gown until the second evening, after I got to shower. No sense getting my nightgown all grimy and the hospital gown was pretty comfy.

I really liked ruining hospital gowns while I could. No sense in bringing home laundry when I couldn't do it by myself anyways. I wasn't bleeding much, but I constantly had nurses checking me and cleaning me up all the time. I was a special case, though, so it's not the same for everyone. When I finally got discharged, I took a shower and changed into my own clothes. It was so amazing to finally be in something else.
As soon as I was out of surgery, I was out of the hospital gown. I wore a tank into surgery too, the kind with a shelf bra in it, and they put DD2 on my chest in the tank for skin-to-skin in recovery. I wore tanks and sweats (once the catheter was out, before that I just went bottomless) the whole hospital stay. I HATE hospital gowns. ETA: After the first day, after the cath came out, I had no excessive bleeding that would have ruined anything I wore. Like PPs have said, they give you some amazing super-pads that take care of anything coming out of you.
However, I did make use of the mesh panties. Those things are lifesavers, steal as many as you can on your way out to wear at home.

I was still stuck in bed with my catheter the whole day/night of my c/s, so I stayed in the hospital gown. I switched into my own night gown and robe the morning after, when they had me get up to pee and shower.
I could have, but I chose to rock hospital gowns for my entire stay. They were easy and I'd rather get them stained and nasty than my own clothes.
This. The hospital were I had DD2 had these gown/robe things that were so comfortable I actually took (a clean) one home. I'll bring it this time around just in case the hospital gowns aren't as nice/comfy
