Poop saga continues......

So I thought we had conquered the poop issues but now that school has started up I think it's a new control issue for him. He has pooped in his pants a few times in the past 2 weeks and it seems deliberate. Today his teacher said he had just gone to the potty and they went to the playground and he went into the play house and pooped in his pants. His teacher knows it's a control thing. He has been lashing out in the mornings about going through carpool. He is going to a new school with a new set of kids and new teachers so I think that is where this is stemming from. I am trying to not make a big deal about it with him b/c he will then continue to do it. he is definitely doing it deliberately b/c he will go and hide from me. Any thoughts on how to get him over this?? It's become infuriating b/c I know he knows better and he IS ptrained and this regression just started up again when school started. Help!

  • omg--I'm in the same boat and Alec is 4.  We have had 5 poopy accidents since he started Pre-K at a new school.  I've tried talking to him about it and I can't get any info out of him. I think it's the change and he's just not comfortable going in a new school.

I've no advice...I've been reading up on this and everyone says it's a control thing and that it will eventually pass.

UGH I hope it passes before they kick us out!!! I hope Alec gets over it soon. PTing is definitely the biggest parenting challenge I have faced. Stupid me for thinking that b/c he got the pee thing down so 'early' that this would be easy.

  • Playground pooping was Gavin's specialty too.  I don't think his was so much about control as much as he just didn't want to stop playing and go inside to poop and he hadn't made the connection that if he pooped his pants, he'd still have to go inside to get cleaned up.  I wish I could tell you what happened that finally made it click for him.  I know that book "Everyone Poops" is what did the trick for Gavin, but I'm not sure WHY it worked?  I mean, I guess he really didn't understand that EVERYONE has to poop so you just do it and move on.  Or maybe it was the fact that I made reading that book and sitting on the potty a regular part of our daily routine.  He is sooooo routine driven that anytime that I need to change our daily schedule, I really have to prep him first to avoid the meltdown.  I don't know.  Maybe it was the combination.  I'm sorry... I know I'm no real help.  It really is trial and error.  I think you're doing the right thing by not making a huge deal about it, but then again, if he's using it for manipulation then maybe turning the tables is a good thing.  Gavin's poop reward is playing Mario.  He knows that he doesn't get to play it until he poops so he runs straight to the bathroom when we get home.  When he's finished, he walks straight to DH and says "I poop, I play Mario now?"  If he refuses to poop- no Mario.  So it is a reward, but its also a punishment if he doesn't get it.  We have made it clear that he has to EARN Mario or TV or basically any kind of technology.  Pooping is one way to earn it.  Maybe switch from a reward method to an earning method?

  • Us too.  Ridge hasn't had an accident but he holds it in...sometimes for three days until he can barely walk.  The move is really getting to him because he has been withholding since we got here (he will go every third day but not daily like it was).  He's been a withholder since he was around 1 and changes set him off.  We were getting better and only going through this cycle maybe once every five months for just a week or two but now it is back.

My Dr told me to do 1/4 cap of Miralax so he couldn't hold it in.  They also make benefiber for kids.  I'm going to Target today to pick some more up.

No other words of wisdom other than I feel your pain.

    I 100% agree with this.

  • I am going through the same fing thing since we started school.  I have NEVER had issues until we started school.  But also I started him on a different allergy meds because it was cheaper and I think that might be causing some issues.  I switched last night back to the old stuff and no accidents (pee pee or poop) today.

But I think since a lot of his classmates were having accidents he thought he would try it out too.

So I am seeing if this allergy med is part of our issue.  Praying that was the issue.
