We're doing the exact same thing. We were told Sony brand is terrible and break often. We have it narrowed down between a Nikon and a Cannon. Of course we're finding people who swear by one brand over the other.. The people at Best Buy told us Cannon would give us better picture quality and would be better if we planned on printing pictures or blowing them up at all. I have zero personal experience, but that is what we have been told as we've been doing our research. Out of the friends who have SLRs it's pretty split down the middle who has Nikon/Cannon. I'll be curious what people recommend to you!!

It is pretty overwhelming!

I haven't bought extra lenses yet, just the one it came with.
I love it. It's user friendly and I've learned a lot in a short time. It's pretty intuitive but my DH is more technical so he's helped show me the ropes. I imagine when we have children we'll invest in a new lens but for now it's been great learning and perfectly good for what we've needed it for.

This is what I have and I like it a lot (dying to upgrade though). It's a great camera to learn on. The kit lens is fine, but if you want something that will do better with low light, get the body only and get the 35mm or 50mm f/1.8. They let in a lot more light and are good lengths for kid pictures.
I have a Canon XTI, 50mm 1.4, 35mm 2.2, Tamron 28-55 (I think). I am not a kit lens fan but most people aren't. While I love my camera I am looking to upgrade to a Canon 60D soon.
I have the canon 40D. The lens it came with, a telephoto (that honestly we only have used in their baptisms so my mom could take a pic from further back in the church - that worked well BTW), and I just received my 50mm 1.8 lens on Saturday. Went to the beach that day to try it out.
I have the original Canon 5D, which I love. Of course I'm lusting over the 5DmkII but that's about $2k out of my budget. I originally started with a Canon Rebel XTi and kit lens then bought the Canon 50mm f1.8 (non-L glass) and I've shot a lot with my dad's 14mm too. Loveeee.
ETA: I also recommend the Photography board. What's yoru price range?
I have the Canon T1i. I like it, although I'm definitely a newb. I still haven't utilized all that the camera can do. I started with the kit lens and the telephoto that came with it, but now I have a 50mm f/1.8 that I use pretty much exclusively. Next I want to get either a 35mm fixed or possibly a Tamron zoom lens to give me a little more variety.
And ditto others about the photography board. I lurk there off and on a lot.

We don't really have a price range, however I don't want to spend a ton of money on something that I'm going to hate, YKWIM? I feel like this a big step up from our point and shoot digital camera we bought at Target. lol

I know what you mean. Is there a rental place near you? In Seattle we have Glazers that I can rent camera bodies and amazing lenses for like $60 a day.
I have a Canon Rebel T2i. I like it b/c it has a smaller body than the 5 or 7D. It also takes HD Video and you can take pictures from the screen on the back. Not just with the view finder. The 5D doesn't do either of those features. Mine came with a kit lens but I also have a 50mm 1.8. You can get the body for around $700-$800. I do not plan on being a 'professional' photographer. This was perfect for just shooting our lives without being too bulky. I also think it is pretty easy to use.
I want a Tamaron lens but that will have to wait. You can find some good deals on Canon's refurbished site.
ETA: We went with Canon opposed to Nikon b/c the lenses are all interchangeable with any Canon DSLR. Everyone in our family already had Canon's so we figured it would be easier if we wanted to borrow a lens.

I have no idea about that. I will have to check into that. Thanks for the idea!

I have a Canon xsi. I like it but I'm not a good enough photographer to really know the difference.
