Questions to ask surgeon?

DD is seeing an eye surgeon today about correcting an issue with one of her eyes.  It's an elective procedure, as it's not hindering her development, but her pedi and regular eye doc (Onan) are strongly encouraging us to have it done.  It requires general anesthesia, which scares the heck out of me.  What kind of questions should I be asking?  Right now, my list includes recovery time and risks (both general surgery risks and the chances of success).  I always feel like there are risks associated that you don't hear about unless you ask the specific question and I would love some help figuring out what questions those are.

Re: Questions to ask surgeon?

  • Is there any basic blood testing that needs to be done ahead of time?

What will happen before the surgery? Is there a pill or something we can give to help calm her prior to? (Versed is available in pill form and can help chill anxious kids a good deal). Are the nurses/techs that will be assisting trained specifically in pediatrics? Where will DD go if there are complications?  (These questions are only needed if you're not going to 'Specially Childrens or Dell Childrens obviously)

What anesthesia will you be using? IV/Gas etc. How will she be monitored during the procedure for oxygen and HR? How long will the recovery period be immedately following the procedure? When will she be ready to go home? (This generally is speaking and keeping down liquids).

What are the chances this does more harm than good? What kind of complications arise? Is there anything we can do to prevent them?

  • Awesome, Taytee.  Thank you.
  • I would also inquire about post-op pain and pain management.  What kind of medication are they going to prescribe for her and/or what is safe for you to be giving her.  How long is it "okay" for her to be experiencing pain/discomfort before you should seek treatment from a doctor.  What kind of post-op symptoms would warrant a trip to the ER.

    Good luck to her!

Oh, good input.  I am worried about timing with school, so most of my recovery thoughts are about how long she'll be out, so I wouldn't have remember to ask about what's normal and what isn't.

  • We had surgery with Dr. Onan at 6 months for exotropia. If you have any questions about the process you can email me at jenniferlcook@gmail.com
  • When asking about the recovery and when to be concerned ask about reactions to the aneathisia. DD didn't react well and threw up for a couple days after surgery. I wasn't prepared for this so I did end up calling the nurse a couple times.
