Freaking out....please help!

I was giving Carmen (who is now 6 1/2 weeks) a bath tonight when I noticed her belly button seems to still be open!!!?? It really has me worried and I don't know if I should go to the ER tonight or just make an apt. tomorrow?!  It doesn't seem to bother her at all and my husband seems to think I'm over-reacting, but it really has me worried that I think I'm looking at her little intestines!

WWYD?

  • What do you mean open? Like you can see inside her belly? Or? I guess I'm confused (which doesn't say much, cause I'm going on very little sleep with a 12 day old baby. :)

  • I actually had the same thing with my son, I of course rushed him into the doctor. He took a look and said it was just a small opening and that it was no more harm then a basic little cut, and the only thing that could heal it was time. My advice is as long as it is just a small opening to just give it time but if it is more go in. And if it makes you feel better wait it out tonight and just go see her doc in the morning

Honestly, I'm not sure if what I am seeing is "inside her belly" or what! That's why it's got me sooo freaked out!  It just looks like a pink, wet skin poking out...it's not very big at all, but big enough to scare me!

AH! Thank you!! This makes me feel better--I searched the internet a little and found a few things that said if it isn't healed properly it doesn't hurt them or anything, but if it doesn't close, it may require surgery--which scares me of course!  I'll probably make her an appointment just to be safe, but thank you for letting me know!

  • we had the same thing happen with our baby girl at 2 wks. I took her to the Dr. and he put silver nitrate ( I think that is what it was called) on the part of her belly button that hadn't dried out yet and within 3 days it was better.

This is exactly what happened with my son.  Don't worry, you aren't seeing into her gut :)

  • I believe you should sometimes do things (even if it seems like an overreaction) to soothe yourself. If it will help you rest easy, take him in. Better safe than sorry. Also, asking other parents with more experience or who have had the same issues is good. They can give reassurance.
