Started my registry... - now people critique it?

My MIL asked about my shower... which my SIL offered to throw me. (YAY) And I told her that SIL asked if I was registering for practical baby gifts. (??) And then that lead to me showing MIL my registry.

Her critique was that I had no Baby Einstein stuff on there.

(I have Pack'n'play, high chair, swing/bouncer, pack'n'play sheets, crib sheets, receiving blankets and a couple bottles and a breast pump.)

I just said oh, well... I didn't watch any tv until I was in high school and I plan on raising our kids that way too...

"yeah but... you have to get the baby einstein stuff..."

Why?

I thought that Baby Einstein stuff had kind of been debunked. (That it didn't harm children but it did not make them smarter in any way?) I am sure that would be better for a baby to watch than say, The Sopranos but I thought that mostly all babies saw on a TV screen was moving blobs of color. If you did decide to rest the baby in front of the TV for a little to get something done I bet PBS would be just fine...and a lot cheaper.

I purposely would NOT get the baby Einstein stuff. Ironic thing about Einstein- he grew up without baby Einstein!! We have no cable and I'm sorta becoming a tv hater. My kid's gonna be a freak.

On a side note, be sure to update/check your registry throughout your pregnancy. They may change styles/availability and so on before your shower gets here. GL

My 3.5 yo still doesn't watch tv. I put on Cinderella yesterday because she loves the princesses (even though she's never seen any of the movies) and she lasted under 3 minutes. She love art, books, music and especially being outside, but doesn't like tv. Seems like a good thing to me! I know there will be a day when there are shows she wants to watch, but until then we're good.

I've already got people critiquing some choices on my registry as well. I just try to brush them off! It's honestly better than when I registered for my bridal shower and I had family members calling and asking me to register at certain stores. Um no, I registered where I wanted to thank you very much

*shudder* haven't registered yet, but sounds like it'll be something fun to look forward to as people critique..

It is your personal preference as far as what you will expose your child to. If you don't want him/her to watch TV then MIL needs to respect that. And of course if she buys it for you anyways, it will be a waste of money since you already told her No.

She replied to the email this morning ... I was totally expecting her to NOT reply and be angry with me, but it wasn't too bad at all.

I had always wondered if they worked or not. Thanks for passing this along to me.

So... that's not bad.

Hopefully she respects the things that we choose to do... as well as everyone else!
