Superstitions on assembling the crib?

Last weekend, MIL asked me who was buying the crib, and I said I had not picked it out yet.  She said "well, you're not going to put it together before the baby comes home are you?"  and I was like "I have no idea what you are talking about."  Apparently there is some "old guinea superstition" (her words not mine) about putting the crib together before baby is born being bad luck.  She said something like "Your mother never told you this?" and I was like "no", thinking, my mother does not believe in such things.  She then disregarded me and turned to DH, appealing, "PLEASE DON'T DO IT!  PROMISE ME YOU WON'T DO IT!"  I just have to laugh . . . my DH is the most un-handy person in the world and I will be putting all the nursery furniture together - when I want to!  I'm not going to come home with a newborn (and a possible c-section, you never know) and then have to worry about putting a crib together.  Is this crazy or what?

Re: Superstitions on assembling the crib?

  • I've never heard of that! I have heard of not buying the crib to early but why wait once it has been bought? I agree you with! Who on their right mind would want to wait until they have the baby to worry about where to put the baby?

  • I've heard of it but we aren't following it. When I come home from the hospital, the last thing on my mind would be if Hubs put the crib together or not.

The baby's room will be finished by Christmas, maybe little things here and there but all furniture and bedding will up and ready to go.

  • LOL- that's crazy. I agree with not doing it too early, but if you have it and you're this far a long I'd go for it. :-)

  • I posted about my husband's superstitions...(he's, um, part Jewish? I don't know if it's possible to be part Jewish...but, well, he's not practicing). Jewish tradition basically says no buying/bringing baby related items into the house before the baby is born as it is bad luck. I don't share these superstitions, so...it's been a bit of a battle, but he bought his first baby-related item a week ago (a bib on a work trip!), so we're making way...

FWIW, we will have a crib and have it assembled before baby gets here. If we don't, it'll never happen!

  • I've heard of it but the only people that I knew that actually followed it were Jewish families who took it further and wouldn't have any baby items in the house before the birth.  I don't think I would do it months and months in advance but within a month of the due date I will totally make sure DH is putting both cribs together!

  • We have the crib but won't put it up until probably closer to Christmas.  I'm thinking when we get the tree up (probably weekend after T-Giving) I will do it soon after that.  The baby and DS will be sharing a room (unless things change somehow - H is trying to figure out a way to avoid them sharing but who knows - he wants to put our house on the market and build one in the mean time - sheesh).  So I want to wait as long as possible before moving around DS's room but who knows.

  • We have the dresser, changing table and crib assembled in the room. We set it up last week!! Don't listen to her lol.
  • I'm Jewish and we have the same superstition.  In fact I'm not even supposed to have any baby items in my house until that baby is born, apparently once I go to the hospital and deliver then I call the store and ask them to deliver what has already been purchased.  I have no idea how that is supposed to be realistic but that is the tradition.  My family won't throw me a shower because of the same superstition, luckily I have friends who will.  My family will come to the shower but probably won't give me any gifts until the baby is born.  I can understand the superstition of not wanting baby stuff in the house if God forbid something goes wrong, it would just make it that much harder, but I just don't think it's practical.
