Last weekend, MIL asked me who was buying the crib, and I said I had not picked it out yet. She said "well, you're not going to put it together before the baby comes home are you?" and I was like "I have no idea what you are talking about." Apparently there is some "old guinea superstition" (her words not mine) about putting the crib together before baby is born being bad luck. She said something like "Your mother never told you this?" and I was like "no", thinking, my mother does not believe in such things. She then disregarded me and turned to DH, appealing, "PLEASE DON'T DO IT! PROMISE ME YOU WON'T DO IT!" I just have to laugh . . . my DH is the most un-handy person in the world and I will be putting all the nursery furniture together - when I want to! I'm not going to come home with a newborn (and a possible c-section, you never know) and then have to worry about putting a crib together. Is this crazy or what?
Re: Superstitions on assembling the crib?
I've heard of it but we aren't following it. When I come home from the hospital, the last thing on my mind would be if Hubs put the crib together or not.
The baby's room will be finished by Christmas, maybe little things here and there but all furniture and bedding will up and ready to go.
I posted about my husband's superstitions...(he's, um, part Jewish? I don't know if it's possible to be part Jewish...but, well, he's not practicing). Jewish tradition basically says no buying/bringing baby related items into the house before the baby is born as it is bad luck. I don't share these superstitions, so...it's been a bit of a battle, but he bought his first baby-related item a week ago (a bib on a work trip!), so we're making way...
FWIW, we will have a crib and have it assembled before baby gets here. If we don't, it'll never happen!
