April 2012 Moms

Probably flame worthy..oh well.

Color me nuts but, I want to have another c-section. My body (shall I say cervix) failed me last time around and with a scheduled c-section, I will know what to expect this time around.

I know no two pregnancies are the same but, I think that my first experience really burnt me on the whole labor and delivery deal. They induced me at 39 weeks (had pre-e) after a month of bedrest in the hospital.

They used Cervidil (sp) the night before to try to get my cervix to thin out and it put me in labor around 2:00 the next morning. Around 7:00am, they started Pitocin and a few hours later, I was having really strong back to back contractions. This continued for 14+ hours and the only thing they could give me was Stadol. No epidural. My cervix was so closed, they couldn't even break my water to move things along.

I've been peeking over on the c-section and VBAC boards and I'm just shaking my head and going yeah....nope. No sir.

I have no desire to try for VBAC.

  • I believe no surgery is a good surgery. But I understand sometimes a c-section is necessary. I'm hoping for a vaginal birth, but I know it may not stay that way. Anything can happen. But I've also never been through it before.

I don't think having an opinion either way is a bad thing. My friend had 3 babies by c-section and she said if she ever had more, she'd want that again.

  • You've got a right to have the birth that's best for you and your baby. With the experience you had last time, you'd be really stressed and worried and anxious and those emotions do not help labor progress naturally. Do what feels right and forget the haters!

  • It's definitely a major surgery and should not be taken lightly. But, I just know that my cervix is an irritable wench!

  • Flame me too.  I opted for a repeat the 2nd time too.  After 28 hours of labor and 12 hours in the hospital on pitocin, DS was still in the same position he was in when I got there.  I really had no desire to do that again with a toddler at home.

  • I would say keep an open mind. My sister did the same thing - went straight to a c-section for her second, no desire for a VBAC - and she regretted it. She said the scheduled c-section was a lot worse than the one that she got after being in labor because the first time the section was a huge relief whereas the second time it was really stressful starting out from feeling fine.

Obviously either way it's 100% your choice and no one should judge, I'm just offering a different perspective.

  • My mom had to have a c-section with me (I was 18 days late and she was in labor for 17 hours) so with my brother and sisters she had c-sections. I think in your case with the wenchy cervix you gotta do what you gotta do
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • Your body and cervix didn't fail you.  They induced you at 39 weeks and your body wasn't ready yet so the induction failed.  That's pretty common and that's why inductions have a higher c/s rate than spontaneous labor.  If you had been able to go into labor on your own, you probably would have progressed just fine.  Feel free to do whatever you want but don't go for a c/s because you think your body doesn't work.

  • I had a really difficult labour with my first.  He weighed in at 9lbs.  I had a really difficult time getting him out. He was posterior until the very end and tore me up pretty badly.  Top it all off with the fact that he broke my tailbone on the way out and that it has been almost 2 years since I delivered, but I still have tailbone pain daily, sometimes so bad I can hardly get up from a seated position.

I have absolutely no desire to have this baby vaginally.  I will be talking to my OB at my first appt about doing a scheduled c/s this time around. I pray he has some empathy for my experience and will agree to do it.

You do whatever you think is best for you and your baby. Period.

  • Thank you for the responses everyone!

I can still hear the doctor's voice saying "Your body isn't responding to the medicine. What do you want to do?"

I can just cross my fingers for a better experience all around next time!

  • I never went into labor with my first and had an emergency c/s. With my second, I gave zero thought to a VBAC and scheduled a c/s. I ended up going into labor before my scheduled date. For a split second, I thought about having the dr check me to see how far along I was and maybe attempt a VBAC. I never even opened my mouth and had my daughter via c/s about two hours after the start of labor.

During my c/s with her, a uterine window was present (you know what they talk about as a complication they see in 1% of previous c/s patients) My dr told me if I attempted a vbac I would have without a doubt ruptured. SO happy with my decision to go straight to the c/s.

You have to do what's right for you. Go with your gut. I'm happy I did.

  • I don't fault you for that at all.  I think it is odd when women who've never given birth want elective C-sections, but honestly, once you've had one, I don't have a problem with whatever a mom thinks will be best for her.

  • I having a c section and I don't care what anyone thinks. It's my body and my baby! My first baby was ready to come on her own and it was a nightmare. She only weiged 4lbs but she wouldn't come out so we finally had to do the c section.

  • I think it is interesting you feel it is flameworthy. I am planning a VBAC and everyone thinks I'm nuts...Both VBAC and RCS are relatively safe options and each have their own risks/benefits. Making an informed choice that is best choice for your family is what is important.

  • This isn't flameworthy at all in my book!  Your body, your baby, your pregnancy, your choice and I am in full support of it!

  • There are very valid reasons to have a cs. It IRKS me to no end how many OBs induce people with poor Bishop scores, which it sounds like you most likely had with a cervix closed up tight. I would always choose a cs over an induction with a poor Bishop score because the rate of failed inductions in that instance is HUGE. Had you gone into it with more progress you would have most likely had a very different experience.

  • My experience was very similar to yours. Induced at 39 1/2 weeks due to pre-e, was on bedrest for 5 weeks before that. My body just wasn't ready. I was in the hospital for two days being induced and barely made it to 5 cm. I am fine with a c/s, at least I know what to expect. As long as the baby gets her safely, I am happy.

Every once in a while, I start thinking about VBAC, but I am not confident that my body can do it.
