7 weeks Nightly Routine...What time to start?

I have a 7 week old LO and am wondering what time to start their nightly  routine...In HSHHC, it says to put them down at the first sign of drowsiness to avoid crying and they will go to sleep pretty easily...

What happens if your LO appear drowsy before the routine starts or even in the middle? Do you forgo the routine for the possibility of putting them down and them falling asleep on their own, or is it better to establish the routine so they know that nightime is coming regardless of how tired they may seem?

Also, my LO appears very tired sometimes at 6 to 6:30, do you think I should put her to bed for good at that time,(with the routine even though she is very tired) or have her cat nap and hold off on bed till she wakes up later?  If she doesn't wake later, would you wake her to put her to bed and do the routine or wait till she wakes on her own.  I would rather her stay up later to spend time with me and DH...But am willing to do what is best for her!

TIA and sorry if confusing (Can you tell that I am?)

Re: 7 weeks Nightly Routine...What time to start?

  • my lo is 7 weeks and she goes to bed at 8ish.  she takes a catnap from 5-545 or so to get her through until 8 b/c i have 2 other kids that need dinner, a bath, and some stories before their 7pm bedtime.  once she is able to sit in her bumbo seat, i'll throw her in the bath w/ the other 2 and they will all go to bed at 7...hopefully.

do whatever your lo wants since it is not dependent on anyone else.  if you are eventually going back to work you may want to consider what time you will get home and what time her eventual bedtime will be.

  • My DD is 8 weeks old and I always start her routine around 8:30 in order for her to be in bed by 9:30. Sometimes she will also appear tired around 6-6:30ish and I just put her down for a small cat nap and wake her up around 8 and play for a bit and start our routine at 8:30. She never gives me any trouble going right back down at 9-9:30.

  • We put LO down b/w 7:30-8PM.  We started the bedtime routine at 7 but I've tried to push that back a little bit b/c the routine only takes 30 min max and I want bedtime to be 8-8:30PM.  The last few days, LO takes a short nap ~5PMfor 30-60 min and starts to get sleepy again around 7.  I nurse him then and then we start the routine.  The last couple nights he's done the longest stretches of sleeping so far.  I'm hoping it continues for a little while.  I'm sure things will change again in a few days or weeks though.
