getting rid of the binky

Hi ladies,

I read a post a couple months ago about getting off the binky.  Someone suggested cutting it.  Has anyone tried this?  Do I cut off a bit of the tip? or do I make a slice down the middle?

  • I didn't do this but from what I understand, you just cut off a bit of the tip. Leave it out for LO to find. Then when they do, exclaim, "It's broken". They typically don't like it anymore and put it back down. Leave it out so they can continue to understand that "it's broken" and eventually they won't care anymore. (I hope I explained that all right.) GL!

  • I tried this. I put a slice in the tip. It didn't work lol. DS totally freaked out until I caved and gave him another! I kept trying to give him the "broken" one and he eventually figured out that he could stick his finger in (we use the hospital style ones) and continue to suck on it.... I think maybe he's too young to understand that it's broken and he can't use it anymore. We are weaning him slowing by only letting him have it at naps, night time and car rides. By 2 we plan on getting rid of it completely.

  • Thanks!

I'm going to try the "broken" method this weekend. if that doesn't work, we'll limit it to naps & bedtime.  I feel a little guilty taking it away, but the Dr told us today it's already starting to affect his teeth.

  • Our pedi says there's no big rush, so we are not trying to work on that right now!

  • If you do go the cutting the tip route,I would be concerned about biting at the cut end and swallowing or choking on pieces of plastic.

  • Unsolicited advice but we went the "cold turkey" route with DS at 15 months (and he was pretty addicted to it) and he was totally over it in 3 days. Really didn't even affect his sleep or anything. If you're toying with the cold turkey idea at all, I highly recommend it.

All of this!  This is how we did it too and it really only took 2 days for us.  Once we took it away, I threw them away so that I couldn't cave.  Done and said!  She is so over it that she has really only tried to take her sisters a time or 2 and only to be cute, not because she "needed/remembered" it.  Best of luck!
