Ingestion PSA

S/o DC's post below, a PSA about storing your toxic chemicals:

Always keep them in the original bottle. Never store something in a bottle intended for ingestion. Ex:

- 2 kids broke into their neighbors barn because they knew he had a big bottle of alcohol (vodka presumably) in there. It was an old alcohol bottle, but it was currently storing antifreeze. They're in the ICU, on dialysis.

- 11 yo helping out grandpa in his garage. Kid gets thirsty and sees a can of Coke. Takes a big swig before he realizes it isn't coke. It's motor oil. He was admitted to the hospital.

- 5 yo in basement with parents. Kid sees a baby food jar on the shelf, grabs it and drinks. It was turpentine. Kid was ultimately okay, but was hospitalized.

Also, I've seen a boat load of ingestions due to that stupid Fabuloso detergent/floor cleaner. It's typically sold in Hispanic supermarkets, in bottles that look like soda bottles, and it comes in purple, orange and turquoise. I don't know how Palmolive can continue to package it with the number of ingestions that occur. I even thought it was soda!

So, if you have old motor oil don't store it in a soda can. Don't keep antifreeze in Vodka bottles, and if you keep paint or paint thinner in baby jars, keep it locked up high.

One would think. I'm shocked it keeps happening.

  • Common sense is surprisingly not that common.
  • True story.  Allie was about 7 months old.  I left her in her room playing while I went to the bathroom. I had a wall plug thing in the wall beside her changing table.  I had no idea she could get to it.  She took out the liquid part thing and was drinking it.  I had to call PC.  I felt so bad and like the world's worst mom.  The guy on PC said it happens more than he would like to admit.  Thank goodness it wasn't toxic and she was fine.  She had berry smelling poops for a week and she her drool smelled for the rest of the day. I took her to the ped just be on the safe side.

That would scare the shiit out of me.

On a side note though, someone should seriously invent a baby-safe non toxic product that produces berry scented poops. Heck, not even just for babies. I want berry scented poop!

Can we make that for dogs too?

LOL. I was thinking the same thing about the scented poop. Someone invent that.

And yeah, everything ETS listed should be common sense. It's sad that it isn't.

No kidding.  I hate smelling sh!t.  It makes me gag.  I would love to sprinkle berry smelling salts on to DH's food for better smelling farts.

Yes.  And my H doesn't understand why I won't let him keep a spray bottle of bleach water in the garage.  The only thing allowed in spray containers is white vinegar.

Thank you! Vinegar might sting your eyes for a second, but if Jack sprays himself with bleach it will be much worse!
