How long does a pediatrician appointment take for you?

Our office just switched to using computers for keeping track of everyone's records.  Instead of a paper folder, they all carry around laptops and they enter all the kids' info into that.  Ever since they started this, dr visits have been taking FOREVER.  I took my older son in for his 2 year check up and we were there for 2 hours!  Most of that, of course, was waiting.  It's really frustrating.  Luckily, I learned from the last visit and brought food, books, toys, to occupy the boys and they behaved so well.  Is 2 hours for a well check-up more than you guys have to wait?  We used to be able to get in and out in about 45 minutes.  Would you consider switching practices?

  • That seems like a horribly long time to me. I would say we are in and out within 45 min at my pedi, and I honestly can't imagine trying to entertain a baby/toddler for longer than that.

  • The first pedi we had took forever and they used the paper system. We never waited less than one hour in the waiting room. Then it was another 1-2 hours in the exam room with only about 5 minutes of that time being with a doctor, and then another 2-3 minutes being with the shot lady. It was insane and we switched pedis as soon as DD's newborn screen tests came back. Our new pedi runs on the computer system and our appointments only take 30-45 mins.

I will ditto this. We are in and out in under an hour. I would def switch. A lot can happen in two hours, and I dont have the patience to wait.

  • Our office just made the switch to laptops but the appointment are still pretty quick. We are in and out in about 45 minutes, but I always make appointments in the morning.

  • Our appointments are usually quick. Between wait time, the actual appointment, and soothing C after shots, we've never been in there more than 45 minutes to an hour.

  • At most ours is 30 min. Thats the very most generally tho we're out of there in like 15-20 min. I would try one more time, they are probably getting used to how the new stuff works. But two hours is insanely long. If it happens again i would probably look for another pedi office.

  • My pedi uses laptops as well and I agree with the others, we are in and out in 45 minutes to an hour. The one time I had to wait a little longer, my pedi was extremely apologetic. I would consider switching!

  • Our appts, too, usually take about 45 minutes, and our pedi uses the laptop method. Maybe since they just switched they are still getting used to the new system? Making the visit longer? I'm with PP in that if it happened again I'd ask them about it and perhaps consider switching.

  • My ped uses laptops too and we're still there for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Most of that is waiting. It's a very popular office and it takes forever to get an appointment. I have to schedule his next check-up on the same day I take him in for one check-up. I love, love, love our pediatrician, though. I just bring a lot of stuff to entertain J. He's usually pretty good.

  • Our pedi uses laptops and I wait in the waiting room, maybe 3 minutes...seen within 10.  The part that take along time is actually talking with the pedi about LO, life, what's going on, and joke around.  I love our pedi and we've always had a wonderful experience.  So far I've had great thoughts about the laptops.

  • For well-baby visits, we're usually called in with 5-10 minutes and in the room for maybe 30 total (usually we wait just a few minutes for the doctor and then the long wait for the nurse to come back and do the shots). For sick visits we often end up waiting longer.

  • We go to a family doctor who doesn't even have a secretary, he has everything automated on his computer (you go to his website to schedule an appt, enter your insurance info, etc). Our well visits are one hour with the doc, after about 5 minutes in the waiting room. Love it!
