Re: POLL - All About Names
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?)
When I was growing up, I got teased for having an "Old Lady name" but my name is Emily, so all those girls who teased me grew up and named their daughters after me. mwahahahahaha!
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling?
n/a
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you?
meh. ok. I find it beyond cool when I meet another lefty, but Emily is a good name and generally chicks named Emily are also cool.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name?
it's common-ish.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child?
it depends on the reason for the spelling. If it were an ethnic spelling (my SIL's name is Krystyna, which is the Polish spelling) then I'd be good with it. Pulling it out of my ass? Not ok.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name?
Ok. If it were the exact same first/middle I'd give them the side-eye, and we'd have to figure out how to be un-confusing at family events, but whatever. I have good taste.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves?
He's too young to know/care. But MIL LOVES to point out when she's met another Sebastian. Who knows why.
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Yes for my full name, no for my nickname.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? My nn is odd, lol.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I usually ask how they spell it because there is a team "K" and a team "C"
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Not super popular right now, but out there for sure.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? Don't think there are any in English.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? Depends on how close the friend or relative is and how often we'd see each other, but that might be a little odd and I'd probably be a bit put off at first. Then again, who cares. Ah, I'm torn.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? We usually run into Grandpas with his name, lol. Only once have we met a little guy with the same name and he was too young to even care.
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Yes, I could find a mug or a little license plate for my bike.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? I would usually find Rachael first, but if I looked hard enough I could usually find Rachel. (I think the added "a" is unnecessary anyway!)
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? As a kid, there weren't many other Rachels, but I hated having to be Rachel [last initial] when there were two of us in a class. Now, I'm also Rachel [last initial] at work, as there's another Rachel in my department. I'm okay with it now, but it's still distracting when you hear your name in conversation and it doesn't relate to you.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Top 100, but not top 50.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I don't like them, generally. I don't want my kid to constantly have to be spelling for or correcting people.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? Ultimately I'd be okay with it if they just loved the name that much, but I might wonder why they didn't try harder to be unique. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? Hasn't happened yet.YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Every once in a while I can find a magnet or cup with my name. Helps that my name is a month of the year
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? n/a
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I am surprised. I have only ever met two other people with my name. It's fun when it happens in person.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? DS1: unique, uncommon name. DS2: very popular name, we had no idea.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? Both my boys have names that are spelled pretty commonly. I am personally not a fan of common names spelled in a unique way. If you want unique, go all the way.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? It wouldn't bother me in the least.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? DS2 meets someone with his name pratically everywhere we go. Not sure how he feels about it. DS1- we've never met another little boy with the same name. Lots with same nickname, but none with the actual name.
Me
1- yes
2- while i can find most items at tourist stops w/ my name on it, they usually neglect the 'e' that comes b/t the c and the y.
3- kinda shocked b/c i haven't come across too many w/ my spelling.
DD
1- no, not even close. h checked on it when she was born and the last time it was popular was the 1920's.
2- eh .. her name isn't all that unique, traditional yes but not something unique like her cousin, MaKaylah
3- dd actually is the 3 girl cousin to have that name be a part of their name - i've got nieces Amanda Rose and McKenzie Rosalind to go w/ my Rosalind Elisabeth .. the girls are all named after their late paternal grandmother. needless to say, i'm proud of the fact that she shares her late grandmother's name.
4- at 2 she doesn't understand the difference and the likelyhood of her coming across another Rosie or Rosalind is VERY rare.
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?)
Yep, pretty much every girl born in the 70's is named Heather (or Jennifer or Sarah or Melissa!). 7 in my graduating class, two of them are my best friends.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling?
N/A
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you?
I LOVE people named Heather. It's like we have a magical bond right away. I have literally NEVER met another Heather I didn't love from the get.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name?
Alex yes, Simon no.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child?
Not into youneek spelling
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name?
I would feel fine about that. Alex is so common that I wouldn't even bat an eyelash at it, Simon is a less common but wouldn't mind a bit. Flattering, like they thought I made a good choice.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves?
Alex seems to not be effected by it, has only happened once or twice that I can recall. I think he thinks other Alex's are cool (hello we are exactly the same). I kind of doubt Simon will ever meet another Simon... part of the reason I love his name is because it's not a "wierd" name, it's totally common, classical, Biblical... but you hardly ever actually meet anyone with the name Simon. At least in the US.
We saw a 10ish year old boy at the 4th of July parade and someone called after him, "Hey Simon!" and I loved seeing that there was another Simon somewhere out there. I'm a name nerd like that though.
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) I rarely find my name on a mug.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? My name just isn't very common. The spelling is normal as far as I know.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I feel happy because I can count on one hand the number of Melindas I have met in my lifetime.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Rose is more popular as a middle name than first name right now.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I would never spell my child's name uniquely. My SIL's name is spelled different than others with her name so people always get it wrong.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I would feel flattered that they liked the name as much as I do.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? n/a, as she doesn't even know her own name yet.
DD2: February 2014
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Not highly popular, but popular enough that a small percentage of people in my high school has my name.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? Sometimes I can find one with my spelling, but not always. There are two common spellings.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? There's usually a camaraderie
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? DS1's is very popular locally. 4 of the 6 boys in his preschool class shared his name. DS2 is not particularly popular, but is both a boy's name and girl's name, so we encounter it more often than I thought we would.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? The alternate spelling for both boys is really uncommon, so I don't think about it much.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? Doesn't bother me at all.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? DS1 has had two best friends, both shared his name. So, I'm thinking he doesn't mind. DS2 is usually excited and interested to meet another person with his name.NorCalMOMS bio* NorCalBOTB* babywearingBIO
Harmony Doula
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Very common. There are about a bajillion Ashleys out there. That meant that I could always find the place holder for the mug with my name, but they were always sold out of the mug.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? n/a
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I'm so used to it now that the novelty has worn off. Eve thinks it's really cool when we meet another Ashley though. And I have to admit, I'm like Heather; I pretty much assume all Ashleys are cool until they prove otherwise.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Neither do.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? Eve's full name is Everette - so I guess it could be considered unique in that it's a boy's name with an "e" on the end to make it more feminine. Theodore is old-fashioned, but not common and the nickname that we chose - Theo - is the less common nn.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I'm torn on this. If the kid was born within a few months of my child, I would assume we were just both on the same wavelength during pregnancy and that they had picked the name before my child was born. If my kid was a few years old and they chose the name, I would think they weren't very creative.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? Eve goes to school with a boy named Everett. For a long time, she would say that they were going to get married because they had the same name.YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Yes, ususally.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? No
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I think it is cool. I don't often meet people with my name actually.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Crash's real name is popular in terms of the top 50. Daughter's is not a popular name.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? Not really a fan, but a lot of people don't get my spelling for my daughter, and I just thought that was the normal spelling.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I wouldn't think it was that big of a deal. It is not uncommon in my husband side ir my father's side for that matter for boys to have the same name.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? Hasn't happened yet.
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) I have a fairly common name. But I normally can't find it on a tourist shop mug
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? Spelling. Mine is spelled with an "h." Not uncommon, but not common enough to see in tourist shops.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I usually ask how it's spelled! Otherwise, I am fine with it.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? The name we have chosen is definitely not common. Her middle name is, though.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? The name (Lorelei) is fairly unique in itself. We just chose the German spelling as opposed to the French spelling (Lorelai).
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? It wouldn't really bother me--maybe if it was one of DH's sisters, it might bother me, but only because of confusion at family events!
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? N/AYOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) My name is not uncommon, but not super common. I could always find a mug, etc.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling?
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I think its cool. In kindergarden, there were 3 Lauras and 2 Laura Ds, so I was Laura Anne.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Her nn is super common. (all people named Ellie are younger than 20 according to Wolfram Alpha) Eleanor is less common but I think gaining in popularity.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I would never respell a name. But we plan to use mostly family names for all our children
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? No biggie. I have a sister named Kristen and a cousin named Krista who are just a few weeks apart. And John has a cousin who he sees often named John. I guess that is a pretty common name though.

1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) I have a very common name and can almost always find it.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling?
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? It doesn't bother me. There were 5 Lisas in my classes in high school. There was one other Lisa at work for awhile, but she's no longer there.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Not really. We wanted to choose names that weren't overly popular.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I really dislike unique spellings that look made up, and I hate the trend of turning vowels into a "y." There are a number of different ways to spell Elliott, but I wouldn't say that any are unique. Same with Dominic.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I would be ok with it. I love the names that we chose and would be happy that someone else liked them too.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? Hasn't happened yet, and they are too young to understand at this point anyway.
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) No
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? Unique spelling, I always found my name but none with the correct spelling. That was honestly fine with me.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? Don't mind. I have had a supervisor with my name before and my BFF and I have the same name.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Yes, but unique spelling
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I love it as long as it makes sense.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I don't own the rights to any name.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? E has a friend in her class with her name but I think she goes by the full name and E is Emme.
1. Yes its a common name. Could find it on a mug if it werent SOLD OUT! lol
2. n/a
3. When I was growing up there was always another girl or three with the same name in my class. It was annoying because I always became Jessica LastInitial or "big' Jessica since I was almost always the taller or older one. :P
My LO(s)
1. #1 & #3 are not popular, #2 is getting more popular
2. not my thing. As it is, people spell and mispronounce #1's name.
3. Friend doesnt bug me but family would be a little odd.
4. Hasnt happened. But #1 does get agitated that she can never find her name on a mug/pencil/etc
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?)
I can usually find it but it isn't really a common or popular name.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? N/A
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I get a bit excited because I've only met a few w/ my name and most of them have been more recently.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Yes
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? DH was very anti unique spellings and I've really only seen DD's name spelled 2 ways.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? Really wouldn't care because her name is common.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? DD's name is Sara (no H) and the only Sara's she's met usually have an H on the end. She refers to them as Sara w/ an H and herself as Sara no H.

YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?)
I have a pretty common/popular name, but could never find it at a tourist shop because...
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling?
...of it's unique spelling
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you?
I don't really notice or care or think anything of it. I would definitely notice if they also spelled it with an F, but in my head I so so identify as "Stefanie with an F" that I really feel like all other Stephanie's have a completely different name than I do. I know that's kind of weird, but true.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Nope, pretty uncommon. I love that it's a real legitimate name that almost no one has. It's common enough that I can name 4 very famous Clive's (Owens, Davis, Cussler, C.S. Lewis), but uncommon enough that I wouldn't be surprised if he never runs into another one in his life.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? We chose such an uncommon name that I would never choose a youneek spelling ALSO, and I probably wouldn't pick any unique spelling for any name. When we loved the name Josephine, my H suggested we spell it Josefine to be like me ("with an F") but I had a hard time imagining a unique spelling at all. So I guess I'm kind of against it for myself/my kids. It was a pain as a kid to be "Stefanie with an F" even though I really do like it now.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I think I'd be flattered. Also, now that we know that IF we have a girl, she'll be several years younger than our friend's Josephine, we just might still use that name for a girl if we have one. So I'd be a hypocrite to be bothered by it, eh?
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? Too young for that to have happened obviously, and I wouldn't be surprised if he/we never meet another Clive.

There are only a few things that I truly have real opinions about and names are one of them!
YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) It's common in the sense that it's typically found at most touristy places. It's not so common that I meet others with my name....at least no one my age.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? Nope - I hate "unique" spellings.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? It's rarely happened - it's never bothered me.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Yes and Yes.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? I abhor them. I think phonetic spellings are ridiculous - I think that variations in spellings are okay depending on the name. 99% of the time, I find them incredibly LAME. Sorry - I just do. Flame if you want.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? I don't care if it's a friend and it would depend on who the family member is. If it were my sister or my DH's sister, I'd be pissed. Cousins, friends, BFFs, acquaintances, etc., I couldn't care less. 9 times out of 10, the child isn't going to associate with my friend's kids when they're adults anyway so why would I care?
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? My son doesn't seem to care - he just calls them by their first and last name. Natalie is too young to notice but we haven't run into any other Natalies in the 16.5 months that she's been around.YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Yes I have a popular name for the year I was born, but you couldn't find it on a mug because of the spelling.
2. If you couldn't find your name on a mug is it because of your name or do you have a unique spelling? The spelling of my name isn't unique, but it's not the most common spelling of the name.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone /go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? Doesn't bother me, though it did a little when I was younger.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? M#1 - yes, more popular than we realized and has increased in popularity since his birth, M#2 - not in the top 100 on the social security list, but have met others with his name
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? NMS
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? A close friend or relative I'd be a little miffed; an acquaintance or more distant relative (beyond first cousin) I wouldn't care.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? He thinks it's funny.

YOU
1. Do you have a common/popular name (i.e. if you were at a tourist stop could you find your name on a mug?) Yes.
3. How do you personally feel when you meet someone/go to school with/work with someone has the same name as you? I don't really care. It gets a little bit annoying when there are three of you on a team but in school I never cared.
YOUR LO(S)
1. Does your child have a common/popular name? Sort of. I've seen more and more of it.
2. What do you think about unique spellings for your own child? We did a unique spelling. It wasn't too off the charts from the normal spelling so I thought that was ok.
3. How would you feel if you already had a child (named of course) and a friend or relative also named their child that name? Eh. I don't think I would mind.
4. How does your child react when they meet someone who has the same name as themselves? We've come across a lot of other kids with her nick name.. but not someone with the same name. We just say "how exciting... another Maddy"
