Is anyone a Sam's Club member?

My husband and I are considering joining because of this auto discount program, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to shop there for other reasons, both for baby products and other stuff too!

  • It's been awhile since I've been to Sam's Club, but if it's anything like Costco, you can get ridiculously good deals on diapers/wipes, picture developing, books, sometimes they have kids clothes, snack like stuff your LO might end up loving and wanting all the time. How much is the membership though? Costco is like $50 a year for us, but if it was a lot more than that, I'd have to think about it.

  • We are members and go maybe once a month.  We  buy bread, milk, produce, yogurt, drinks, dog treats etc.  We also got a smart phone for free from there (it was time for our upgrade), making it worth our membership fee for this year.  It is useful for parties...Ex:  I brought rolls to a party and spent $20 for dozens of fresh rolls for sandwiches.  Would have cost me a lot more at a regular grocery store.  So I guess it depends...

  • We live down the street from one and honestly only joined because of the gas discounts.  But have found other things to be great.  They have really great discounts on clothes (especially nice if you need between sizes while losing baby weight) and gift kind of stuff.  Food is fairly priced and there is a discount in the pharmacy too.  If you're not satisfied they will give you a refund of the membership cost.
  • I have been in the past but I let the card expire.  I plan to renew it soon.  I love Sams, you can get some great deals, but you usually have to buy a large quantity because that's all they sell.  According to Baby Bargains they have the lowest price on diapers, so that alone is worth the membership for me.  I always get laundry soap, dishwasher detergent, frozen chicken breasts ($13 for a HUGE bag of Tyson brand), frozen name brand pizzas in 3 packs for the price of 2...lots of deals like that.  They sell diapers, wipes, baby clothes, maybe canned baby food too.

  • If you have a BJ's near you, I recommend that so much more!

At BJ's, they release store coupons all the time--in mailers sent to your house, and in store PLUS you can stack with manufacturer coupons for extra savings :)

  • I have had a membership to a similar club in the past.  You can get great deals IF you really know your prices.  Many, many things are not any less expensive, people just think they are because they're in a Price Club and buying by the gross.

Generally you can go in and look around even if you aren't a member.  I would say go and see what they've got and how the prices compare on the things you use regularly.  That should tell you pretty clearly if you want to invest or not.

The other thing to be very careful of is the atmosphere of the store can all of a sudden make a new television or a swing set an impulse buy.  Even if you get a good price, it's still costing you money since you would NOT have walked out of the Kroger with a new swing set.

  • It all depends. I like Costco better, but we have both to choose from in our area. The number one thing we get at Costco is TOILET PAPER! I also love their photo center.

I know that Sam's club will allow you to have a one-time visitor's pass and you can even buy items with that pass during your visit. If you want to know what's in your local Sam's club and see prices first hand, I recommend doing that.

  • Oh i forgot about tp and laundry detergent! Those are always awesome buys! And dishwasher tabs and clorox wipes and stuff. Also, if you have a dog or cat, you can get some awesome deals on food.
  • We used to belong to a similar store, BJs. We don't really live near it anymore, so we decided to not join for the past few years. My mom is still a member and has bought us some diapers -- I figured she can get us stuff like that from there and I can pay her back. We don't really have a lot of extra storage or use for the big boxes of food, but if you have a big family and have the room for extra stuff, it's worth it. They have good deals on things like baby products, toilet paper/paper towels, etc. And most have gas discounts too. And like another poster said, BJs has coupons all the time, but not sure if Sam's does...

Maybe you can somehow compare how much a membership cost to see how much you would spend and save there. My husband used to get a special discount at work, so maybe they have some special offers or something too for signing up.

  • Depends on how large of a family you have. I go weekly sometimes twice a week, but I have four kids. I buy 90% of my groceries there. They do have excellent deals on wipes and diapers and for some formula.

  • Iv found. Amazon to be a much better deal on diapers, wipes, paper towels etc. Just use subscribe and save with amazon mom. SAMs club is only good if you needed large amounts of groceries. Fruit, bread etc. That's not helpful for us.

  • DH and I have been Sam's club members since before we had any kids. Here are my tips/observations:

    1. Know the good sale prices at your grocery store. Many things are generally cheaper at Sam's club, but if your grocery store frequently offers it at a lower sale price, you are better off stocking up during the sale.

    2. Even with only two adults in the household before kids, there were lots of food items that were not too big of a quantity for us to eat before things went bad. We still shy away from some of the bakery and produce though if we think it will go to waste before we eat it all.

    3. I think the plus membership is worth it if they have it in your area. You pay more but get extra discounts, exteneded shopping hours and benefits like prescription discounts. They also guarantee that you will make up the extra cost in savings or you get your money back,

    4. As others have mentioned, there are lots of unexpected things you can get good deals on. Last year I got some Carters fleece blanket sleepers for around $7 which is cheaper than I bought some in the carter's outlet with a 20% coupon.

    5. If you happen to have a discovercard cashback bonus card, you can get free memeberships with your cashback bonus. We do this every year.

I'm sure there are other things too that I'm not thinking of. I am a big fan of sams.

THIS...BJ's is cheaper than even Walmart on many items, diapers, wipes and baby food to name a few.  The extra coupons are great and they sell name brands.  I got my membership for really cheap through my employer, so that is something to look into as well.

I just renewed my membership to Sam's last week and it was $40.

Same here. Their diapers are a great discount on a daily basis not to mention that they send out diaper coupons every other month.

We also get all vitamins, allergy pills (claritan and zyrtec generics are CRAZY cheap. 200 pills for the price of 20/50 regular pills), paper plates, papertowels, fruit. Oh, oh, and they have tons of new books at a good price.
