I'm making cupcakes for C's bday. I have never piped the frosting before. What's a good recipe for piping frosting? Probably both a chocolate and something I can flavor if needed. Oh, and I know I need to buy the little metal piping thing too, can I just use a ziplock back to hold the frosting and cut off the tip (just the tip!)? Or should I buy one of those rubbery "icing bag thingies." Technical terms, yo.
TIA!
Re: Best frosting for piping?
I don't have a good recipe for icing but the bag trick works fine if you just want the icng to come out in a line (like for writing a name). If you wanted to have those star looking things or make flowers I would buy a disposable icing bag and an assortment of tips. Make sure the tips are the same size as the bag, I always forget to do this!
Homemade cream cheese frosting is best for piping directly into the mouth.
A stick of butta room temp, two packages of cream cheese room temp, and a pound of confectioners sugar. Let it sit in the fridge to harden up a bit and I just used the ziplock and cut corner to pipe.
I like using this one when I do cupcakes, it is nice and fluffy. I use 1 cup shortening and 1 cup butter (instead of the 2 cups of shortening). I find with just shortening it kinda has the "stick to the roof of your mouth" thing happening when you eat it. If you want to make it chocolate add 1.5 cups of cocoa and just adjust the whipping cream to give it a good consistency.

Walmart (or a craft store like Michaels) sells a cupcake decorating kit by wilton for less that $10 that comes with a few different tips (including one to add filling into the cupcakes....YUM) and some disposable bags.

i have a bunch of frosting recipes on my food blog.
the absolute best is swiss buttercream- but i doubt you're going to want to make that.
go with american buttercream. butter cut with shortening (if it's going to be hot out), powdered sugar, vanilla, cream. done.

I used a basic buttercream, and they turned out well. This is the recipe I used:
