Nutramigen is so nasty!

So, my LO was diagnosed with a cow's milk allergy yesterday. Our Dr put us on nutramigen. She called it "gold powder." It smells and tastes horrible. I thought regular formula was bad, but this is so much worse. I am pumping, but my supply is running low. I have been adding formula to BM to keep up with her. Now I feel so bad to have to give it to her. I am only adding about 1 oz of it to the BM, but eventually it will be more. I can't imagine her taking a straight bottle of this stuff. Any suggestions????

  • I hear that! We gave it to LO#1 so he would get a taste of what bitter was...talk about nasty, nasty!

  • Oh it is AWFUL!!!! I know I had to put my LO on this for a while too. But I was told by my sons pediatric gastroenterologist that right now babies do not have developed taste buds. She is not tasting the horrible formula that you are she just knows she is getting formula. I was so scared when I stopped breastfeeding and gave the first full bottle of this to my LO I thought he wouldn't eat, but he did. My doctor said that anytime you switch it is going to be different. She may not eat as much or act like she does not like it the first few feedings, but it is just because it is new. I assure you she will start gulping it down in no time. My did he started taking an ounce more that he ever has at a time about a week after I started the Nutramigen. Just feel better knowing she does not taste it how you do!

  • I agree with the last poster, it's just because it's different. My LO was on BM and diagnosed with the milk/soy protein allergy and we put him on Nutramigen. At first he was like "wth is this stuff" but that only lasted like one or two feedings and then he was just hungry and ate it all up. :) FYI a lot of insurance companies will cover all or a portion of it so if you decide it works for your LO, get a scrip from the doc and send it in. Additionally, Amazon Mom has it on subscribe and save for like $5 less per can. :)
