MH and i were talking last night about my c-sect. w/ my son, it was technically an emergency but not a big rush job. i was induced at 34wks for pre-e...made no progress and due to my high BP's they decided to get him out that way.
I was pretty loopy from the mag. sulfate and the spinal but i do remember having to ask when he was being let in. he told me last night that they had already started cutting when they let him in and that he was probably in the room less than 10 min. total, after waiting outside at least half an hour! we didn't get a good pic of DS when he first came out b/c of the confusion, just after one he was already cleaned off.
so, just curious if it's the norm for them to wait til the last minute or if this time, since it's planned, if they will let him in during the prep and all that. thanks!
Re: at what point did YH/partner go in the OR?
DH wasn't allowed to come in until after they made the first incision. I had a minor freak out moment as I realized they were starting the surgery without him. But then suddenly, there he was, and it was ok.
this!
DH wasn't allowed in the OR until the spinal had been administered and the team had arrived (sheet was up by this time). The had probably already started cutting, but I'm not sure.
this exactly
Mine was unplanned. DH waited outside the OR until I was completely prepped. He says he feels like he waited 10-15 minutes. He was brought in and sat on a stool next to my head, and surgery began pretty soon after he was let in.
They let him in as soon as I was fully prepped, but before they started cutting.
He left to go to the NICU with DD.
I'm pretty sure this is how it was with mine. I'm sure they had probably started cutting but my OB hadn't said anything so I don't know for sure. He was next to me as both babies were delivered and then after clamping/cutting their cords and getting some pics taken he headed to the nursery with them.

Mine was not a planned c-section but it wasn't a complete emergency. It wasn't a "quick we have to do this NOW" type of section, it was a "i've been monitoring all morning and his heartrate keeps dropping so I want to do this as soon as possible before it gets worse" situation.
Shortly after they got me in there and transferred to the table, they brought H in, and he sat next to me through the whole thing. When they brought Caleb out, they told him to stand up so he could see. All the prep work (like shaving, giving me anti-nausea stuff, etc) was done in my room before they moved me to the OR. I believe H was in there through everything - the cutting, etc.
My husband wasn't brought in until after they started cutting. I think I was pretty out of it because I didn't ask when he was coming, one of the nurses asked me if I had someone to join me and then they brought him in. He told me that there was blood on the floor when he walked in. He was there until after DS was born then went with DS to the recovery room to wait for me while I was put back together.
We were team green and they didn't tell us boy/girl until the anesthesiologist asked them to let us know. It wasn't my doctor doing the surgery because he wasn't on call anymore when the decision to cut was made (it was an unplanned/emergency c-section), but it definitely wasn't the experience that you see on tv, and that was a bit disappointing. Honestly, I think I saw DS in the OR, but I didn't get to hold him until recovery room, but I was a bit upset about feeling the surgery at that point, so my memory of the fine details is a bit fuzzy.

DH came in after the initial cut was made... he left with DS when they took him to get cleaned up etc. He held DS while they stiched/stapled me back up.
He then called my mom crying and told her that he was holding his son...
This. He was concerned because he was sick with a cold, but they didn't have any issues as long as he was wearing all the necessary gear. And he also left the OR to follow LO to the nursery. He met me back in triage before they moved me to my room.

6 months: 16lbs 15 oz, 27 inches long
This. He followed DD out to the recovery room and I met them there when they were finished with me.

With DD1 - unplanned - DH came in once I was moved onto the table in the OR. And then followed her to the NICU - she wasn't interested in breathing, so they had to resuscitate her twice before taking her to the NICU for further evaluation.
With DD2 - somewhat planned - was there the entire time and then went to the NICU with her as she was born at 33 wks (6 wks prior to her scheduled c/s).
I am hoping he'll be allowed to be there the entire time as well, although I don't see why not as he's a medical student, so he has proper hospital ID and my permission LOL
He was never away from me, actually; until he took DD2 out of the OR. My c/s wasn't planned, but wasn't a true emergency -- my water broke and DD2 was still breech.
He got into his scrubs & stuff while I was being prepped & waiting in triage for docs to arrive, etc. He walked next to the bed while they wheeled me into the OR, held my hands while they gave me the spinal, sat next to my head the whole time, and was the first one to hold DD2 and bring her over to me once she was rubbed down and wrapped up.
The only point at which he left was when he took DD2 to get her shots, etc. and spend a few minutes under the warmer b/c it was so cold in the OR. I was in recovery with both of them, and BFing, within like 30-40 minutes of when she was born, so we were only apart briefly and I was fine with that.
I think it really, really depends on your hospital's SOP.

My first c/s was unplanned after several hours of labor so DH was not allowed into the OR until after I was prepped and they were ready to begin the surgery.
My 2nd c/s was scheduled and a MUCH easier process. My DH was with my the entire time. He was with me in the pre-op room, he walked with me into the OR, he was there the whole time they were prepping me, during the surgery, while they were stitching me up, and him and baby were in the recovery room with me as well.
