2nd Trimester

For petite little mamas-to-be: are you showing more than your taller friends?

I'm 4'11" and was 110 lbs pre-pregnancy. In the last month, I have ballooned! Most ladies who've been pregnant before guess that I'm 7-8 months along when I'm only 6 months in. I've noticed the taller ladies in my yoga class don't show as much - is our height an explanatory factor? I'm excercising and eating well but my tummy is starting to feel the pull and I'm not sure how much bigger I can stretch. I feel like I've been showing big from the beginning and I kept thinking maybe it's twins, but we've had the 20 week sono and still just 1 little person in there so I don't have much of an explanation for how huge I am compared to other pregnant ladies. My weight gain is rather normal - definitely within the realms of what the Dr recommend.

Height-wise & should-width, I'm XS but my belly's circumfrance won't fit much longer in that size :/  I feel freakishly large :(

  • Height is a factor! I'm 5"3 and despite it being my first pregnancy, I started showing very quickly.

People always ask me when I'm due, and when I say December 26th they make a face and go 'Well, your going to get way bigger! You have so much more to go'

I don't even want to think of how big my belly is going to be in the next few months haha.

  • I've been showing for awhile, and I am 5'9".Yes  I think I'm kinda in the minority for tall women though.

  • I'm also 4'11".  As my OB stated in both my pregnancies.  "I have 12 inches to grow a 19 inch baby.".  So, yes, you will show earlier and more.
  • I know how you feel. I kept asking the ultrasound tech are you sure there is only one.

  • I'm 5'2, 110 lbs. I am not showing at 16 weeks threee days. Sometimes there is a smallish bump, but I can still wear all my pants. I havent gained any weight either.
  • I'm average height -- 5'5 or so -- but I have a really short torso (my legs are as long as my 6'1 husband's!), and I'm definitely showing a lot more than I expected to be this early on a first pregnancy. Like one of the PPs said, there just isn't a lot of room for the uterus to expand within the torso, so it's gotta go outward!

  • ME TOO! Well, for the most part. I'm 4'11" also and just about 115-120 ppw. But I was also a DD prepregnancy. lol I look HUGE too though. I think it's just cause were smaller framed we look so big. It's like with boobs a D looks about right on someone with a taller frame but on a shorter person it looks BIG. I haven't actually gained almost any weight but I look 3 times the size of one of my friends who's due in a month! She's taller than me and has very obviously gained weight but it almost looks like we could switch gestation! lol

  • I'm about 5'8, with a relatively long torso.  I'm just now starting to show at 26 weeks so I'm sure height is why you're looking so much bigger.  As long as the baby is healthy, it's all good, right?

  • I think it is completely dependent on your body type. I'm 5'2 and the baby is no where to be seen (I have a B tummy, see my rant of hating my pregnant body). When I went in for my 19 week appointment, the lady measuring me said I was really small, and she has no idea how I'm so small for having such a small torso. Ultrasound showed he was big and ahead, it just looks like I carry him inside more. FWIW, I'd rather be uncomfortable and look pregnant than uncomfortable and not look pregnant. :D

  • I'm not sure height is a factor.

I'm 5'2 and I'm not showing at all. My sister is 5'6-5'7 and was showing at 11 weeks. It was hidden well from other people but if she lifted her shirt, there was definitely a bump.

  • Im 5'3 about 110lb pre-pregnancy...I have a small bump and my pants do not fit anymore..You can only tell if i were a tight shirt or lift my shirt up...but I think it just depends on your body.....

  • I started showing early too..I am 5'5 and was 110lbs..now ? lol

I usually have such a tiny 24 inch waste that even food shows if I eat.  Its all good though..working out every couple of days.  I love my bump!

  • I'm just under 5'3 and have a barely there torso. I have just started showing this past month and it is now out there for all to see.

This is my first but I am way smaller than most of the people in the area that are farther behind me or just due around the same time. They are all taller than me as well. So I guess it's different for everyone!

  • I'm 5'2" and definitely feel bigger. There's a girl I work with who's easily 5'10" and is a month ahead of me and I look like I'm a month ahead of her!

  • HAHA i love this topic!! I am 4'11 also and i have only gained 6 lbs (my last weigh in was last tuesday at my 20 week) so far in my pregnancy but i have been told that i look 7 months pregnant!!! I started showing at about 10 weeks!!! My cousin is a month ahead of me and i am bigger than her!

  • For sure!  I am 5'3'' and got really big with DS.  When you are shorter the baby has no where to go but out!!  People who are taller with longer torsos allow the baby to have more room to stretch and often don't get as big.  Not that that's how it is for everyone but people that I have met.

  • I'm 5'4 and 110 lbs and will be 4 months tomorrow and still am barely showing. It just looks like I ate a big meal or something. I guess everyone is different.
  • I am 5'4" with a short torso (DH is 5'10" and my legs are the same length as his). I started showing pretty early. I look 6 months pregnant. People at work are constantly saying I am "huge" and "am I sure it's not twins".
  • I'm 5'11".  My OB explains that that is why she doesnt' rely on fundal measurements but instead likes to do manual manipulation and exams of stomachs: b/c generally someone who is 5'1" is going to have a much bigger stomach than me at 5'11" even though we are the same week; I just have more length room to store the growing LO so my stomach may not get as big.

  • Height is actually not a factor as much as the length of your torso. I'm 5'8 and have no torso so I show SOOO much earlier and have more of a belly bump out in front.

I was HUGE with my DD I am so scared of how big I'm going to be this time. I already lost sight of my toes....

  • I?m 5?3 and 112lbs (size 2) pre-preggo and my belly is still quite small (I can still sleep comfortably on my back for a majority of the night).  I?m 27 weeks along now and people are shocked that I?m this far along since I look like I?m 4 months pregnant.  I haven?t had to buy any maternity tops yet, and am still buying a small size in tops, just my pants don?t fit.

Sometimes, I still have to tell people that I?m pregnant because depending on what I wear, people can?t tell.  The doctor told me that baby is measuring a little smaller than average and wants me to eat more, I?ve gained about 15lbs and she wants me to gain 30lbs by the end of my pregnancy. The doc did say that baby may be smaller than average because I?m also petite to begin with..

for the record, my waistline is measuring at 36 inches now.. up 10.5" from pre-preganancy..

  • Yes!! This is my first baby so I didn't expect to start showing right away, but I couldn't button my jeans anymore at 11 weeks. I'm 5'0" and have only gained 2lbs so far (14w 6d). At my last appt my OB thought my fundal measurements seemed bigger than 14 weeks. She did a manual belly exam to feel my uterus and an ultrasound to make sure there was only 1 baby and that the dates still matched up. I was relieved to see only one healthy baby that measured perfectly to match my due date. She said that my torso is just very short and the baby has nowhere to go but out!! I'm just nervous about how big/uncomfortable I'm going to be in a few more months. Yikes! lol
