Papagena (& others) Applesauce recipe...

I just saw in the post below you made your own applesauce this weekend.  We're going apple picking on Saturday and I want to make a couple batches.  Could you share your recipe?

TIA!

  • I'm not Papa. :) But I just made applesauce, so I thought I'd share.

Basically I just quarter the apples, boil them, and grind them through a food mill. I actually just posted about it on my blog this morning: https://mindfullyfrugalmom.blogspot.com/2011/09/make-it-yourself-monday-homemade.html

basically - but i added a little bit of water (not much - added too much the first time and ended up using some of the excess for the second batch).  You don't need much at all as when the apples break down they'll give off a lot of moisture.  Before I can it I'm going to reheat and add some cinnamon.

  • Hmmm. I don't have a food mill.  Could a food processor do the same thing?

Yeah - you'[ll just have to core the apples before you cook them.  You can even just use a potato masher if you skin them as well.

  • I don't take the skin of mine and I push it through a strainer (like a large pasta stainer) when I am done so it catches the skin and any rogue seeds and makes it smooth going through.  It is how my grandmother and mom did it so it never occurred to me to do it with my food processor!

  • I just did applesauce today to put in the freezer for my LO. Nothing like the smell of cooking apples in the house on a fall day!! I leave the skins on mine too (love the color it gives the sauce!) and then just run it all through the blender Smile
