Baby carrier rec/advice pls :)

So, I'm gonna have to go to that wedding in two weeks...blah.  I'm going to baby wear Cli the entire time and not allow him to be held/passed around.  I was going to just plan to wear him in the Moby, and I might still but the thing is - it's SO hot in that thing.  He gets super sweaty and fussy after a short time, even when he's just in there in a onesie.  And since the wedding is outside and the high up there today is 107, I'm nervous that it won't be cool enough to use the Moby without him majorly resisting.  Just the other night, in my friends very comfortable A/C'd house, he fought me on the Moby and I ended up just holding him in my arms while he slept instead.

SO, I was hoping/wondering if anyone has advice for a carrier that is cooler but would still offer us the privacy and "don't touch my baby" ness of the Moby?  I have Baby's R Us, Target, and Amazon gift cards to burn, so if there's something someone here swears by, I'd probably be willing to try it.

Also, we have an Ergo, which I haven't tried using with Cli.  He's probably only about 8 1/2 lb now...would that be cooler though and maybe use a blanket like an infant insert?  Or buy the insert with my Amazon dollars?

Thoughts?  Advice?  Greatly appreciated :)

Ok I thought there was a summer moby but it looks like it just has uv protection. I still think you could find a lighter weight fabric and make one.
You give me far too much credit I think ;)  I guess if someone had a suggestion of the specific fabric weight/type I'm looking for I could try it.  I do have a 40% off coupon for Joanns...but I'm kinda fabric/fabric weight dumb.

  • You could look for a solarveil sling, but I am not sure you would be able to get one ordered and to you on time.

    Or this:

  • I didn't use my infant insert and you're totally welcome to borrow it if you want to try it out before buying one.  I'm no help in finding a less hot option...I had a December baby!

  • Hmm, don't know if there is a good answer for you. Attaching a new squishy baby to your body is hot and sweaty business in the heat :). Your best bet would be a gauze wrap or sling but you can't get one at those retailers and it might be hard to get in two weeks. Next best bet would probably be a light weight ring sling but I am not a fan of slings for newborns so I don't have a rec. To find something a little cooler than the moby you could diy and pick out a light colored and light weight jersey knit at joanns. You will want about 5 yards and then cut it into at least 20 inch strips - less fabric than moby so cooler. With an infant the ergo or other carriers really wouldn't be cooler because their whole body has to be supported against your body regardless and the infant inserts are thick. A blanket with the ergo would be more material than using the moby. What hold are you using with the moby? We've done apple hill and fairs with Avonlea in the heat, I use a lighter weight jersey and do the pocket newborn hug hold which puts a layer of fabric between our bodies which cuts down on the sweatiness. I also put a bonnet on her which covers her face and I can unwrap her a little without much skin showing. Hth, good luck!

  • I have a Bjorn that you are more than welcome to borrow. Like pp said, it's going to be hot no matter what. Babies are little heaters. With the Bjorn since is less fabric it may be cooler. It's not nearly as comfortable as the ergo, but it may work for the day. It's all yours, just say the word :-)

PS- love the new siggy pic.

ETA: I've also got a Balboa Sling if you'd like to try that out too.

  • I cannot say enough good things about the Ergo Infant insert.  I think that's your answer right there.

At one time, the infant insert was all awkward and sideways, but they re-did it and now it's called "Heart 2 Heart" (it came out just before Simon was born).  It's like a little cocoon you wrap them in and then drop them in the Ergo, super comfy, cozy, and IMO pretty bearable for mom because even though you are wearing baby, you have the Ergo straps on you as opposed to all that flipping fabric!

I started putting Si in his when he was only a week old, and we used it literally every day until he was over the weight limit.  It was a lifesaver for me, and IMO so much easier and cooler than the moby.

    Go for it!

  • Thanks everyone :)  I think I'm going to get the infant insert and the Breeze Baby K'tan and hopefully the k'tan will work great and the infant insert will enable me to use my ergo sooner cuz I've been wanting to anyway.  Appreciate all the advice and offers to let me borrow stuff.  Thanks again ladies :)

  • Not to be a Debbie Downer in this post, but the Ergo Infant Insert was MEGA HOT for me and The Husband.  We both became so unbelievably sweaty when wearing her with the insert, we ditched it earlier than we were technically supposed to, and just ended up sticking a bolster in the bottom of the carrier to boost her up.  I would definitely try wearing him in it on a hot day before the wedding to see how you feel, because we were using ours in May/June and it was unbearable.  Just my (unsolicited) 2 cents!

  • Looks like the Breeze Ktan is a pouch-style sling? I think that's a great bet. I always used my ring sling in hot weather and it really wasn't too bad since there's so little material draped on you.

  • I've been getting hot in the Moby, too. It looks like you have great advice! Does your baby sleep in his car seat? A few times we've just taken the entire car seat with us. You could put a light, muslim blanket over the top so people won't touch. Just a thought, which would let you get up on the dance floor. ;)

Ok... for baby #2 I need to talk to you. Cause I couldn't figure out how to use it at all, and I have it, and I WANTED it to work out.
