Hi,
I am actually posting if anyone has ever heard of this condition. My nephew who is three years old is getting speech therapy. I am so glad that my sister finally did it, but I feel like she waited so long and he is a year behind in his speech. He doesn't speak in complete sentences and most of what he says is jibberish. Anyway, she mentioned that during childbirth, his bilirubin was really high and she says that he has symptoms of this Kernicterus condition. She believes that he may have suffered some brain damage now that she is looking back. Does anyone have an LO with this condition and if you do, please tell me your experiences? I would like to give her as much feedback as possible that I could find from others' experiences. I am talking alot to my speech therapy friends and trying to get feedback from them, as well. TIA for your thoughts.
Re: Kernicterus
Has she sought the advice of a neurologist as to whether he suffered some brain damage. I'm sure an MRI could rule that out.
A lot of children have high bilirubin. I'm pretty sure it's more about the duration than the number for the most part. DS was 18 something at Day 3 of life, and they let him work through it without the lights.
