Heart condition...not sure what this means

DS has a small bump on the left center of his chest. It feels like bone, so the Dr. sent us for an X-Ray. The Doctor's office called yesterday and said that the X-Ray showed nothing regarding the bump, but it did show an enlarged heart.

They now have us scheduled to see a Pediatric Cardiologist at the end of the month. Obviously, I am freaking out about this. I was researching this online a bit and saw that there is a very broad spectrum of what could be wrong, from just monitoring it and medication to something very serious.

He is not showing any symptoms that would lead me to think that something could be wrong.

Has anyone else been through this...

Re: Heart condition...not sure what this means

  • Heart issues are often associated with any number of genetic anomolies/abnormalities as well as disorders/medical conditions--but they can also occur in isolation.  I know it is impossible to not worry, but until you know more information, Dr. Google is only going to cause you more stress and anxiety.

  • What she said. ^^

My son has a bump on the end of the sternum too. He was born with a large PDA but it closed by 4 days old. (Most children's PDAs close as soon as they are born) We had an ultrsound originally and they saw a shadow that ended up being nothing. He had an EKG and they found nothing.

Don't google. Worrying until you absolutely have too is a waste of energy. Good Luck!

  • Ditto not googling!  My daughter was born with a heart defect that did require surgery (she has Down syndrome, and both that and the heart defect were diagnosed prenatally).  I thought it would be the worst thing in the world.  I doubt that it's something serious, but even if it is, I've been AMAZED by what the doctors can do.  Ellie is only 2 weeks post-op today and you wouldn't know it to look at her!

  • Sorry for the late response on this.  As one heart mom to another, it's worth considering that the appointment isn't until the end of the month - if your pedi thought it was really serious, the appointment would be a lot sooner (ours was, and it still wasn't an ultra time critical issue - PDA and bicuspid valve with stenosis).  Hope this gives you a little comfort, at least.
