hearing the heart beat on U/S--question for you

So I keep seeing where people said they HEARD the heart beat on the ultra sound...do you mean you SAW it?  Because we went in and had ours and we SAW the heart beating and she calculated the heart rate, but we didn't get to HEAR it.  She checked my ovaries and everything and we heard a heart beat but she explained it was MY heart beat and it was showing there was good blood flow...but we didn't HEAR the baby's heart beat...just saw it and she told us the heart rate.  Just trying to understand!

Re: hearing the heart beat on U/S--question for you

  • They flip a switch and you can hear it. That's how they measure it at my Ob's office.. But I've heard it's only a simulated audio heartbeat based on the visual heartbeat.

  • I only got to see the heartbeat at 6w4d, I'm still waiting to hear it, hopefully at my next appt.

  • Oh boy. Now I'm all confused. I've been reading that ultrasounds can be done as early as 6 weeks and that you see the heartbeat flicker on the screen, and that dopplers are to hear the heartbeat, but usually can't be heard until week 12 or so. My doctor's office just called to remind me of my appointment on Monday (as if I need reminder since it's my first appointment; lol!!! Cool), but the girl in the office said they'd be doing a doppler then, and scheduling an ultrasound at a separate facility for later (since sometimes, certain insurance gives them a hard time about doing ultrasounds in house, so they always send you out for the first one while double-checking with insurance). The thing that confuses me is that I'll be 7 weeks and 2 days on Monday. So am I not going to be able to hear the heartbeat? I'll be panicked until whenever the ultrasound is then!!! Any advice from mommies who have been there/done that?

  • We heard it today at my ultrasound. it was a transvaginal u/s not sure if that made a difference. Then she did something else with the machine and she was able to measure it. She said it was hard to detect mine at first because the baby was moving all over the place.

  • Oh and on Tuesday the midwife tried to hear the heartbeat on the doppler, but she couldn't pick it up. She's going to try again in two weeks.

  • With my first pregnancy, we heard it and saw it.

With this one, we saw it and when I asked if we could hear it, the tech said that it wouldn't be possible (no Doppler).  I'm going in next week for my first OB appointment and called to ask if I'd hear the heartbeat (Doppler) and I was given an enthusiastic yes by the nurse who I spoke with.

  • You may or may not be able to hear it on the Doppler. You have to remember that the baby is not even an inch...so they have to blindly try to find the heartbeat and it's difficult when it's so small...but sometimes you get lucky. Also with the Doppler you can hear your own heartbeat...so it gets confusing whose is whose...at least for me! I have always heard the heartbeat with the u/s. If you don't...make sure to ask the tech! All they have to do is turn the audio on...
  • We didn't hear it. I thought we would be able to b/c I remember doing that with DD but for whatever reason this time, we didnt. Maybe b/c I had to do the wand up the cooch and it doesn't do sounds (?). No idea.

I did see the sound waves and see the heart flickering though, so that was cool.

  • We saw the heartbeats at 7 weeks. The crazy lady doing the u/s said to me when I asked about hearing them " they are too young for that the energy will fry your babies" um ok! bad visual!!!

On Wednesday I heard them with the doppler at 10 weeks <:

  • At 7 weeks we SAW it but didn't HEAR it.  I went in on tuesday (9w2d) and I heard it and saw it.  I don't remember her flipping a switch but maybe it was already on since that was the point of the u/s.

  • At my U/S today, we didn't hear it. We could see it on the screen just like you, but no sound. I guess I should have asked.
