  I think it depends on where you are living and I've heard it both ways. However, I mostly think of it as being LIE-la in most places. (Yet when I first read it I thought LEE-la because of a family friend with that name that pronounces it that way). Let us know what your friends says.

  I've only heard it pronounced LIE-luh. It is the name of Jessica's best friend from the Sweet Valley High series. I thought it was such an exotic name when my friends and I started reading the series in elementary school. LOL. I can't believe my mom let me read such twaddle!

  This is what always pops into my head too. Oh Lila Fowler.

  I would only pronounce it Lee-la if the person was a Spanish-speaker (or if I was talking about the restaurant in Miami named Lila's). Otherwise, Lie-la.

  My husband's former step-mother's mother's name (confused yet?) was Lila but she pronounced it Lill-a.

  I always thought it was Lee-la. I knew a girl who spelled/pronounced it that way, and I grew up with a lot of Spanish speakers, so Lee-la is the pronunciation that comes to mind.

  This is why I prefer the spelling Lyla - there's less ambiguity

  I would say Lie-luh, unless the friend was Indian. I know 2 Indian girls named Lila and they both pronounce it "LEE-luh."

  It's my FN and it's pronounced LIE-lah.  Though I've heard all kinds of different pronunciations -- LEE-lah, LILL-uh, lill-EE-uh, LAY-lah, LEE-sah, and even a Linda once.
