How young is too young to have a sleep over??

My son is turning 7 yrs old next month. He wants to have a few of the boys in his class for a sleep over. Is it too young?? Are the other moms going to let their boys stay the night?? I have no problems with their moms asking me whatever they would like to know and I will be home the whole time as well as my hubby, and MIL and FIL.

Re: How young is too young to have a sleep over??

  • Both my girls have had friends sleep over already.  DD#1 was invited to a sleep over last summer so right after she turned 4 at her BFF's.  She decided she wasn't ready yet, but was dying to by Christmas (but wasn't invited again since she said she wasn't ready).  We had BFF sleep over here in the Spring and again over the summer. BFF is DD#1's best friend from preschool.  We've know them since the girls were two, but we're not really close with her parents or anything.  We've hung out as a family maybe twice or something and are definitely friends and friendly but just know each other through the girls.

One of those times, we had DD#2's BFF sleep over.  Both girls were 3 at the time, but the other little girl knows me, DH and everyone in the family really well since I've been good friends with her mom since before either of us had kids.  So that's a different kind of sleep over, you know?

All of the times, the girls loved it and everyone did really well.  It's an experience!  DD#1 is dying to have more friends sleep over.  Some say they're not ready and others are totally all for it.  It really depends on the child.  Both girls have been invited to sleep over DD#1's BFF's some time.  We're just waiting for a weekend when I'm not working so I can be home to go get DD#2 (or both) if necessary and when they're free.

  • I don't think my 6-year-old boy would do it.  I just asked and he said he would at his BFF's only.  But, I betcha I'd be getting a phone call.

He also still sleeps in a pullup, which is a whole different social issue I can't deal with at the moment.

I know there were girls in his class last year who did it - and my DD might by the time she's that age.  But, the boys seem less receptive to the idea.

  • I think this is one of those "depends" situations. I think my DD#1 would be fine with a sleepover.

  • My son is also 7, and he would badly like to have a friend sleep over.  I think it depends on the kid.  He has one friend who would be fine with it, but his best friend would probably miss his mom at bedtime.  In fact, when I asked my son if he would want to spend the night at his friend's house, he said, "No -- I'd be scared.  But I would be fine if he spends the night here with me!"

I have suggested that we might try a half-sleepover: play, dinner, more play, then go home right before bed.  That might be a good step toward the real thing!

  • I just wanted to make a suggestion- a friend of mine had a "Sleepover party" when her daughter turned 6.  She rented a clubhouse (you could do this at your house!) and everyone came in their pj's.  She had popcorn and a movie for them and they all watched in their sleeping bags.  She didn't want to have a real sleepover b/c she knew alot might not be comfortable and she wanted a bigger group.

  • DD wanted a sleep-over for her 6th birthday.  We had only her three closest friends over.  They all stayed the night and we had no tears.  It's a tough call because some kids get home sick but thankfully the girls had been to our place often enough that they didn't seem to mind.
