moms of 1 or more - crib question

DD is going to be 23 months when the new baby comes! I think the new baby will sleep in a cradle for a little while, maybe a few months. Do I need a second crib? I'd really hate to have to buy another one! How are you going to or did you handle that transition?

Re: moms of 1 or more - crib question

  • Our oldest two our 16 months apart.  When we were ready to move DS#2 to a crib we just transitioned DS#1 to a toddler bed.  I wouldn't want two cribs.

  • DS will be a little over 2 when the new baby comes, so we are just going to plan on switching him to a big bed. We have a twin bed for him already. I am not sure if we need to get rails or if I can just start him off with the mattress and boxspring on the floor.

His crib turns into a toddler bed.  If for some reason he has difficulty with the transition we will convert that and see how it goes. If the baby has outgrown the bassinette and DS has still not adjusted to his big bed we will just suck it up and buy a second crib.I don't want him to feel like he had to give up his crib for the new baby.  I figure we will start the transition a couple of months before the new LO gets here. I really don't want to wind up with two cribs, so hopefully it goes well.

  • DD transitioned herself out of the crib at 15 months.... by climbing up on the top of the rail and base-jumping out!  We didn't have a choice, and converted to toddler bed immediately.  Yes, it is and was a problem that she doesn't stay in her bed when we put her to sleep- she's now 3.5.  We had to get to the point where we realized we can't control when she falls asleep.  She would get up, play, make a mess and fall asleep on the floor.  When we went to bed, we'd just move her to her bed.  We still have to do that sometimes, although she usually goes to sleep in her bed now.  For a long time we had to remove her bookshelf and dresser, and completely empty her changing cabinet because she'd take literally everything out.  There is no disciplining a 2 year old for something like this.  Trust me.  I guess my point is we just had to learn to roll with the punches way earlier than I expected.  At first it was a source of stress and contention, but she was a baby and we had to learn to accept that she's just... naughty!  Just like you can't force a child to eat, you cant force them to sleep either.  I'm sure you will all have way fewer difficulties than I did because my kid is a very special brand of crazy (and of course I say that with love and pride!), but I wanted to share my experience so you'd know the potential worst case scenario!

  • We bought a convertible crib to begin with and will do the same for #2 so they will both end up with big beds from the same purchase.

Ditto.  So we'll have two "cribs" but each will belong to each child for their entire childhood (toddler  bed, head board).

  • My first will be 25 months when our new LO arrives, we are going to move him to his big boy bed around 23 months (so he does not associate the new baby with looking his room), he sleeps on a cot at daycare so we figure he should be ok in a toddler bed

  • it's really up to you & where your LO is at the time.  DS was 23 mos when DS #2 was born and we had hoped to do the toddler bed transition before then but he wasn't ready.  The baby slept in our room in a pack and play (with the napper...highly recommend!!) and by the time he was ready for the crib (8-10 wks) DS was in the toddler bed.  This time around i have no idea since DS #2 will be 21 months.  I can't imagine him being ready for a bed by then so we are thinking about buying one of the cribs from Ikea that has the drop-down side for when he eventually transitions.

  • My kiddos will be 26 months apart, and we just change DS's crib into a toddler bed.  My plan is to have DS in the toddler until January or February, then put him on a mattress on the floor.  That way by the time baby arrives he'll have adjusted to his new bed, and once the baby uses the crib at 3-4 months old, DS won't think we're taking something away from him to give to the baby.

  • Nah, I wouldn't buy another crib.  DD is 2.5 and is still in a crib just because we haven't had a need to get rid of it until now.  She'll get a big bed because it's time anyway and the baby will get the crib.

  • My DS will be 19 months when our 2nd arrives.  We're going to play it by ear and see how things are going a couple months before the baby is due.  I'd like to keep DS in the crib for as long as possible so that we don't have to worry as much about him getting up, etc., but he already likes to climb things so if he climbs out of his crib (or tries to) then we'll make the switch to a bed.  I don't love the idea of buying a 2nd crib but I will for peace of mind, if it works out.

  • DS #1 will be 15 mos when the baby is born and we don't plan on buying a new crib.  He will stay in the crib and the new baby will be in our room (for the first 3-6 mos) until we can transition DS #1 into a bed.  I'm hoping this will be sooner rather than later.  Last resort will be a new crib.

  • we have the graco lauren convertible crib for ds#1 (who will be 14 mns when #2 comes along). we planned on taking the front off when he's ready for a "toddler bed" and then it will one day transition to a full size bed. i know we'll probably run into that phase where he wants the cool car bed or something but figure we'll cross that bridge if we ever get there.

as for #2, they'll probably be in our pnp for the first few months & then we're planning on buying the graco lauren crib again for #2. it's about $150 so we think it's cheap enough to justify having a 2nd crib around. plus if we do run into the issue of kids wanting fun toddler beds, etc. we'd only have to store the headboards of these cribs to keep them around for use as a full size bed in the future, so if the kids have cheapo toddler beds for a few years, when they grow out of them we'll have full head boards around

  • DS is 25 months now.  In December (or so) we will transition him out of the crib so we don't have to deal with it once the baby comes, even though the baby will sleep in the amby in our room for a while.

  • DD will be 19 mos old when baby #2 comes. We are making a big girl room for her and it will have a full-sized bed with toddler rails. We plan on transitioning her into it when baby comes, I didn't want to have to buy two cribs.

  • My son is 22 months. We transitioned him into a toddler bed (his convertible crib) last weekend. It has been a rough few days, but he should be fine in the next week or so.

My nephew has been in a toddler bed since he was about 18 months and it works out great for them.

  • My youngest two will be 24 months apart and I was planning to keep our daughter in the crib till she is a little over two and then transition her to the toddler bed we bought.  In the meantime, I plan to have the newborn sleep in our room in a pack and play...when they are that little they don't need a crib anyways...good luck!
