Baby Swing ? - 2nd time moms

I just realized the baby swing we bought - Fisher Price My Little Lamb - is battery operated and not a plug in model.  Would you return it and buy a model that can be plugged in, or not worry about it and just be sure to have extra batteries in the house.  (We ALWAYS have extra batteries because as soon as I use them, I add batteries to our weekly grocery list).

What brand/model of swing do you have?

  • We have battery....didn't even realize they made plug ins!

  • We had a Graco one my SIL loaned us that plugged in and it was great. My friend had one that took only batteries and it turned out to be the only place her LO would nap for more than 10 minutes at a time. She joked that as a result she had a second mortgage in C battery costs. Personally I would go for one that plugs in just in case your baby really happens to like the swing.

  • I have one that plugs in but my suggestion is to buy a big rechargable battery station and use that. In the next few years you are going to need batteries for a LOT of kids toys etc. Our battery consumption has gone up by 10x since having a child! Rechargable are easy because when one set runs out you just switch it out in the charger and then the batteries are waiting for you when you need to switch again. In the end it will save you money and it's better for the earth.
  • DD hated the swing, so we never went through one set of batteries.

I didn't realize they made ones that plug in, if your house has a lot of plugs then get one of those.  If it's old like my house and plugs are few and far inbetween then you may want to keep the battery one.

  • I have both, and a travel swing.  We have a drawer JUST for batteries at our house because we need them constantly.  The plug in is nice to not need batteries, but having the cord out on the floor isn't so great for a kid crawling around either.

  • My DS loved his swing and we used it a lot the first few months but I think I changed the batteries maybe twice.  I guess the swing just didn't really eat up the battery power.  I would suggest rechargeable batteries as it is so much cheaper in the long run with everything that uses batteries!

  • I'd return it.  One of our must have features for a swing was it had to plug in.  Partly to never be caught short, partly to get consistent performance from the swing and partly as an environmental concern.  I believe our swing was a fisher price and they make several with the nice papasan seat, that will swing in either direction and can be both plugged in or use batteries.

I don't think it's worth investing in rechargables as very little else uses the same battery size.  Investing in a charger and a good set (or few good sets) of rechargable AA batteries IS a good investment but, won't help with your swing.

We did keep one set of batteries for the swing on hand in case of a power failure but, never needed to use them.

  • I went with Graco, plug in... I don?t want to be caught without batteries and a crying baby. :)

  • I have this swing and used it with DS.  It's not too bad of a battery eater and DS used it a lot.  We only used it until he was 4 or 5 months old, and I don't think we even went through four battery changes.

This is the one we got. It gets great reviews. I'd return the one you got and get this newer version.

Good to know - thanks, ladies!!

  • We have this same one and used it for my daughter. I just kept extra batteries on hand, it didn't drain them too quickly.

  • I have a plug in one and it was great.  Before we had that though, we had one that used batteries.  We just bought rechargeable D batteries and a big charging station, which is super important anyway with kids since EVERYTHING takes batteries.

  • We have the FP Little Lamb swing.  We used it multiple times a day for 6 months and changed the batteries 3 times.

  • I would return it. That swing eats batteries.

  • We have the graco safari snuggle or something like that. It plugs in or goes off battery.  I would probably return it and get one that plugs in- otherwise you will be spending a fortune in batteries.
