Tonight I was downstairs (just for a few min), dh was in playing in his office(upstairs) and Isabel was in our room watching some tv. Well the next thing I know I hear all kinds of banging and falling on the floor. I knew she was not hurt but, I knew she was up to something. Dh checks on her then calls for me to some up. When I got upstairs she was sitting in her plastic drawer organizer thing (from her bathroom drawer) and she had her little broom and she was pretending she was in a canoe!!!
That took real thought and planning and she did it fast! She saw the characters on the Backyardigans canoeing and that's when she jumped up and got her supplies! We hit rewind to figure part of that out and we just let it play from the canoe part again and she was just rowing away!!!![]()
(Please excuse the wires, I have not done much to our room since we moved. Also, excuse her ducks, she put them there about 20 min before the pic was taken:)~)
Also to add to my AWness, she tucked her baby doll into her bed tonight, patted it on the head and said her version of "night, night" which is a pretty new word for her!
And last, she is doing a "lot" of mimicking!
While we of course want her to do more than mimic one day it's great that she is actually saying words...along with her Autism she also has verbal apraxia which is basically a motor planning issues keeping what's in her head from coming out of her mouth in a way we can understand. So, the fact that what she is saying are pretty understandable words is soooo great!
She is really making big strides everyday! Everyday, many times a day I am amazed by something she is doing or saying. She has also learned to count to 3 (couldn't help it, had to throw one more in;) )!
My kid rocks! Thanks for letting me AW![]()
Re: AW: Total Isabel AW :) PIP
LOVE this post!!! YAY Isabel!!! DS has been starting to imitate more as well. Such small, baby steps for him, but it's progress and we'll take it!!! DS is also suspected to have apraxia of speech and for his motor skills.
I forget, is she doing ABA? We might try the DIR-floortime approach vs. ABA at this point. One person says do ABA and another says to do floortime. lol
Ya Isabel! That is all amazing wonderful progress. She is making great strides and she has her wonderful parents to thank for that. I hope you aren't just proud of her but also proud of you and DH. You guys are doing a wonderful job!
Yay for your DS! Baby step are a huge deal for us (ASD parents) and should totally be celebrated! Apraxia is a biitch!!! Receptive skills are s l o w l y coming along, that is an area she is really delayed in and of course speech.
Well, b/c we totally suck as parents we are not doing either right now. We are in the same boat of one person telling you one thing and they next person telling you another! I bought a book on ABA that was recommended to us by her Developmental Pedi and it walks you through ABA. Now that I'm part time I'm really going to work with her at home on it and research floor time and work on that as well. Our insurance coverage such for this kind of stuff. Also, she starts school in just over a month so she will be getting therapy there. I plan on keeping her in private OT (she should be getting it at school to IEP is in 2 weeks) because I really feel she get soooo much from her therapist, they love eachother!
So glad N is making some improvements!
That is beyond adorable!
In all honesty, I'd be pulling out my camera and calling DH if Kira started rowing like that, so for Isabel to do that at nearly a year younger and with her autism diagnosis I'm so impressed and thrilled.
And please, no apologies for the look of the room, especially since mine looks worse than that and I've lived here for 6 years.
You're all doing so phenomenally!!! Yay!!!

OMG! That is awesome! That shows very creative thinking!
And I am so happy that she is making progress in the language department too. That must make you feel so good.
I don't know much about the therapies for autism, but I am sure that having you around more (working less) is very helpful. You don't suck. You rock!
Please AW her. I love everything you said in this post. And your bedroom looks like a magazine shoot compared to mine. Our bedroom is the biggest room in the house..which means all of the extra stuff ends up there.
This warms my heart. It's always been obvious to me that she was a special girl - you can see it in her photos. And now that we know about her autism diagnosis and how she is making great strides, I see it even more.
I LOVE watching our little ones use their imaginations...it's a sign of intelligence. She is clearly a smart cookie! Go Isabel!
