Moses Basket v. Bassinet

Have any of you ladies used a moses basket for your baby's first few months? I'm debating whether we should get a bassinet or a moses basket to keep next to our bed for the first few months and since this is my first baby, I have no idea what the pros and cons might be for each one. Thanks in advance for any input!

Re: Moses Basket v. Bassinet

  • This is my first so I have no experience, but from what I've been told is it's a personal preference kind of thing.  I personally have trouble with the idea of putting my baby in a basket (I mean come on, it really does look like a basket).  But TONS of women swear by them.  FWIW we're going with the newborn napper that comes with our Pack N Play.

  • Do moses baskets have stands you can put them on?  What I'm picturing is just a basket on the floor.  If that's the case, you're not going to want to bend over to get your baby right after you give birth.  I may not know of all the varieties out there, though...

  • The one that I am looking at does have a stand, which can actually be rocked back and forth if you want to use that feature. I agree that the concept of putting my baby in a basket seems a little odd, but the rocking feature seems nice, and I wasn't sure if a moses basket is more versatile than a bassinet?
  • Yeah, I always thought you put them on the floor so I have been ignoring them because I know my dog would take full advantage and make it baby face licking time! :)

I think we're also doing the Pack n Play sleeper attachment.

  • I loved my bassinet.  But, we sold it when moving.  This time, I am looking at a Moses basket with stand.  The thing I like about those, is that it works at home, but I can take it to my Mom's and let baby sleep in that, instead of a blanket on the floor or a pain in the butt to put up and take down Pack N Play.  I am still shopping around.  But MAN, yes, the pack and play is technically easy.  BUT.  It is a pain in the butt for a 2 hour visit to Meemaw's.

  • We aren't getting either.  DH's family has passed down a cradle to use - but I don't want the babe to sleep in our room at all, and will just put him in his crib from the start. I feel kind of guilty that our baby won't use the cradle - but I prefer not to have to transition him to a new sleeping place later on.

However, from the financial viewpoint, I would use the NN on the PNP because you are getting more than one use out of the same product.  The bassinets/moses baskets are an added expense that really you don't need if you are getting a PNP reguardless.

  • We used a Moses basket and stand for DS. I could move it around house easily to different rooms, it was relatively inexpensive(we got a gift card to target and used that), and at that time had zero extra space in our bedroom, so it fit well. We did not get a PNP but Phil and Ted's baby tent (can't remember real name) for ease of transport, and have been really happy with those choices.
