Anyone know how to a get a review of a school??

We live in PA now and we're looking to buy a house.  It's located really close to an elementary school, so that's where DD will go in a few years (I know I'm totally getting ahead of myself, but whatever).

Anyone know a website that gives reviews of schools?  TIA!

  • I've found word of mouth is the best way.  If your close to the Philadelphia region there is a Philly local board.  Also, when you are looking at houses, if you see any potential neighbors outside with kids go up and ask them.

  • You could prabobly go online and get the school's "grades" for the past few years.  I've done this for NYC schools.

  • Try www.greatschools.org.  You can search by the district, city or name of school for both public and private schools.  I think you might need a membership for the premium info, but it might be worth it if you are thinking of buying a home.  GL!

This they use a couple different ratings--test scores, etc. which is important but what's more telling are the community reviews and ratings.

  • We also used www.schooldigger.com

And, honestly, you are NOT getting ahead of yourself. If anything, you should take the middle and high schools into consideration, too. If not for your LO, then for resale value. Take it from a bad experience of my own...

  • Just an FYI, don't JUST go by the school's letter grade that the government gives them. My school passed our state mandated tests with a whopping 97% and we're considered a "C" school. This is because some of our "subgroups" (ESL-english second language, special ed. etc) didn't pass their portion the way the state wanted, so our school as a whole was labeled a "C".

Word of mouth is the best way to go. Find some people that you trust their opinion and ask around.
