WWYD: Buy a used carseat?

I found a travel system  (almost identical to the one we registered for) and 2 carseat bases on my work's classifieds website. Based on the pictures it looks like the carseat and stroller are in really good condition. However, is a used carseat safe?

Listing details:

Originally purchased last winter. Stroller has very little use (10 times or less) and car seat is also in excellent condition. New retail value for all 4 pieces is ~$200. Asking $60 obo.

Someone will most definitely buy the travel system for us for one of our showers, but I thought I could save some money?

    i say "yes" IF it were a recent item. i didn't see a date on the picture you linked... but if it's a recent item, still within safety regulations i would purchase the used item. Even if family were to buy you the item, maybe they can buy you a different big item so you get both :)

    ETA: you ladies are right.. i never even thought about an accident.. yikes. scary.

    A car seat is something I would never trust to buy used, regardless of who it belonged to or how good a condition it were in. You just never know with 100% certainty what happened to it before you, and I would not risk my child's safety since the car seat will be used frequently and for a while.

    You have absolutely NO clue if it was ever in an accident. There is no way I would ever buy a used carseat.

    If you think someone will buy a travel system for you, then it comes with a carseat. If someone doesn't buy one for you...get one on sale. A carseat isn't something you want to skimp on.

    I replied "yes" but only if I knew the person really well and trusted them that it wasn't in an accident.  Maybe you can just buy the stroller and have someone else buy you a new car seat?  At least you're saving money!

    The only reason I voted NO is becuase of the issue of it being in an accident. even a minor fender bender you would have no way of knowing. Tongue Tied

    I voted no. I'm all for using gently used baby items, but I would use extreme caution with a carseat or crib. If you know and trust the person with the used item and it is still within the expiration date then I think it would be fine. However, if the person is a complete stranger then I wouldn't :( As PP mentioned, there is no way to tell if the seat has been in an accident before, which affects the seat's performance.

    I would not use a used carseat because as pp's stated you have no way of knowing if it has been in an accident. However, since it is a travel system you could probably save money by using the stroller and only replacing the car seat (if it is one where you are able to purchase the car seat separately.)

    We bought a used travel system from a friend.

    As long as it has never been in an accident and is less than the expiry date (and will be as long as LO will need it) if the stroller, car seat and bases are in good condition go for it!

    But if it's not a friend you have no way of knowing that. Someone could easily say it wasn't just to get you to buy it.
