Using a dresser as a changing table...advice please :)

After doing a lot of looking around, I've decided to purchase a dresser to use instead of a standard changing table because I'd like to get more use out of it once our little man is older.  I know that this is done a lot, but I can't seem to figure out how to go about securing the changing pad...?  We're getting the babies r us contour pad, and I do see that there's a strap, but unless I'm missing something I don't see how it will strap onto the top of a dresser.  Do you ladies have any suggestions?

  • we didn't do anything to fix it to the dresser, DS's weight is more than enough to keep it in place

some people place an anti-slip mat between the pad and the dresser

  • I think sometimes people attach a strap to the bottom of the pad and then tack it in to the back of the dresser.

  • Our changing pad had 2 wood screws and 2 straps to attach it to the back of the dresser, but I don't feel comfortable doing that as we did purchase a nice, expensive dresser that will last.

I may go and get a gripper pad to put underneath, but I really don't plan on changing him in his room (except for night feedings) and I don't plan on letting him lay up there without my hand on him.

  • I also use a changing pad on top of a dresser but didn't do anything to secure it. Like pp said, my LO's weight is enough to keep it in place while I'm changing her. I have heard of people putting non skid pads underneath it but also heard that the non skid pad took the finish off the dresser when they were done with it.

  • Ours had two little tabs and screws to attach them to the back of the dresser.  We just put down some gripper shelf and drawer liner though and it works great for us.

  • Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't feel comfortable just putting a pad on top of the dresser.  We got a dresser topper/changing tray at the LON outlet (like this) which attaches to the back of the dresser and holds the pad in place.

  • we didn't use ours.  we used the antislip stuff that you use in kitchen drawers.  I saw it and figured I'd try it.  Works great and have never had an issue with it sliding off.

  • Ours just came with one screw that goes through the strap and attaches to the back of the dresser....it barely secured it at all.  I have been meaning to get some anti-slip-something to put underneath. It's worked well enough without it for 8 months, but he's starting to try and launch himself off the table, now.

  • We're using the straps nailed into the back of the dresser.  They are nailed into the wooden portion at the back, not the drawers, so won't see holes when it's taken off.  Who looks at the back of a dress anyways?

  • Our changing pad had a gripping texture which worked very well until I used pledge on the dresser=(  We now have a gripping pad that is normally used under a rug (cut to fit the changing pad), this works great!

I agree - we didn't secure it - and we also NEVER leave DD on the changing pad without a hand on her.

  • I plan on using his dresser as a changing table as well and it also makes me a bit nervous.  I plan on using the strap and attaching it to the back of the dresser.

    This.
We've been using ours secured this way for almost 2 years now. I still change my almost 23 month old on it and change my 3 week old on it too. Never had a problem with it sliding about at all and when they are both done with it we can take the pad off and it'll just be a dresser.

  • Our changing pad has two straps that screw into the back of the dresser.  But it would probably be fine with nothing.  Never, ever leave a child on the changing table unsupervised even if it is for a second.  They will fall off, regardless of how the changing pad is secured.

  • You can tack the strap to the back of the dresser to keep it in place. It also has a skid resistant top, so that will help it to stay in place.
