Another newbie but 2nd time mom

Hello everyone!  I know this board is going to be extremely helpful over the next 6 months as we prepare for the birth of our second child.

Almost 3 years ago, I gave birth to our beautiful daughter.  The only childbirth course that we took was an 8 hour long crash course at our hospital one Saturday.  I was prepared for childbirth but very ill-prepared for pain management.  I ended up getting an epidural at 6cm.  The epidural did not work and I was stuck in bed.  I don't want that to happen again and have my mind set on a natural birth this time.

I have a wonderful OB who is the most "natural" non-invasive OB that I have ever heard of.  I trust her completely and am so happy to have found her.

My DH and I are trying to figure out the best way to start to prepare for this delivery.  I have already looked into Bradley or Hypnobirthing classes and there are none in our area or even close.  Is there a book that you would recommend and would that be sufficient enough?

My OB also recommended a doula that she has worked with before.  We may go that route but my DH is a little worried that he'd be "replaced" if we hire a doula.

    I am sure a doula could say this better than I can, but tell your DH that the doula is not there to replace him, but to support him to better support you.  Also, she can give him a break to go to the bathroom, get a sandwich, etc.

    Welcome! I have had two med-free births and have only taken the generic child birth classes at the hospital. However, I went into it knowing that med-free is what I wanted so even though I didn't take any special courses for it I did do research on pain management techniques. I think being educated is very important to a successful med-free birth. I think that your previous experience of a failed epi may help you have a natural birth this time. I have heard some women do home study courses on Bradley or Hypnobirthing you may be able to look into that. And as far as a Doula I think they are a invaluable asset for some women and their husbands during labor. Tell your husband that a Doula isn't there to just support you but is there to support both of you and if anything she will make his job easier but certainly not take away his role.

    Hello! I am also a newbie/second time mom and in a very similar boat. I just posted a few posts below if you want to read my story, but like you I took a generic "prepared childbirth" class at the hospital. I went into my labor with the mindset that I would like to "try" going all natural but since I didn't know what to expect, I was going to see how things went and go from there. I was was in no way prepared for the pain and I freaked out and took the epidural at 4 centimeters. I am now expecting our second child and am going to fully commit to a natural birth this time around.

    You are lucky to have found such a wonderful OB! My husband is in the army and we don't live in an area where I can be seen off post, so my options are limited at the tiny hospital here on post. I haven't even had an appointment yet because I am only 5 weeks, but I'm not sure what to expect this time around since I actually have strong feelings about how I want to do things this time. I hope I can get lucky and end up with a doctor who is on board with that.

    Anyway, good luck to you and I look forward to talking with you and everyone else on this board. Let me know what books you end up reading and what you think of them. I have added a few to my amazon wish list and plan to start ordering and reading them very soon.
